On Saturday a star-studded field of gallopers will take to the Caulfield track for the 2011 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, and while gun three-year-old Smart Missile is the early favourite, odds on Brisbane raider Woorim are beginning to firm.
Anthony Cummings’ untapped colt Smart Missile is out to make a statement when they race against older horses and in Melbourne for the first time in the $350,000 Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m).
All the hype surrounding the potential and already proven ability of this son of Fastnet Rock saw Smart Missile open at the top of the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes odds at a quote of $3.30 through Luxbet.
Over the past day, however, Smart Missile has drifted out to $3.50 with punters a little sceptical over their chances to win from the extreme outside barrier 17.
While questions and doubts over a Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes 2011 result favouring the favourite, there have been two genuine market movers for the race at Luxbet.
2011 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes Betting Market Movers:
#2 Woorim (5)
- Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes Odds: $4.80 into $4.60 Luxbet
Drawn ideally in barrier five, Robert Heathcote’s Show A Heart six-year-old is in excellent form for this having travelled down south and claimed a 1200 metre handicap at Moonee Valley first-up on September 10.
They carried 60.5kg for that win and drop to 57.5kg on Saturday with Brisbane-based hoop Damian Browne making the trip to ride.
“He drops three kilos from a very, very comprehensive win at Moonee Valley, so some could argue that he’s into the race very well even though it is a Group 1 race,” Heathcote said.
Woorim placed an unlucky third behind classy mares Response and No Evidence Needed in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes 12 months ago, so has been to the track and has come on since them.
“I’m 100 percent positive that he’s going much better (than last year),” Heathcote said with confidence.
Woorim has also won over the distance (1400m) in the Glasshouse Handicap in the winter and trainer is singing them praises.
“He’s always possessed the ability and had this scintillating finish for the last couple of years, but the problems I’ve had have been feet-related and this is the first time that we’ve gone into a preparation where we believe we have his feet 100 percent right,” Heathcote said.
#12 Master Of Design (10)
- Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes Odds: $26 into $17 Luxbet
Master Of Design was originally not fancied for this testing elite level assignment from barrier 10, but after all the talk of how double-digits are no disadvantage for this race, the punters are coming around.
David Payne’s well-bred Redoute’s Choice six-year-old (formerly prepared by Lee Freedman) is stepping up to a Group 1 for the first time, but their juicy opening price was hard to understand considering they come off a gritty victory in the Group 2 Sebring Spring (1300m) at Rosehill
In the Sebring Master Of Design beat the likes of Torio’s Quest, Fast Clip and fellow Sir Rupert Clarke rival Pinwheel who is at a much shorter price of $8.50 for Saturday’s rematch.
