While Secret Admirer is the short-priced favourite and firming in the Shannon Stakes 2011 betting ahead of Saturday’s showdown at Rosehill, early money has also started to come in for two other hopefuls.
The $175,000 Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m) is scheduled to run as Rosehill Race 6 on Saturday and after betting on the handicap feature opened at Luxbet yesterday there have been three market firmers:
#3 Secret Admirer
- Shannon Stakes Odds: $2.40 into $2.35 Luxbet
Grahame Begg’s Group 1 winning mare drawn ideally in barrier two for her Epsom Handicap lead-up, carries 54kg with Brenton Avdulla engaged, a nice weight for the four-year-old who carried 56kg to victory in the elite-level Flight Stakes last spring. Races third-up after two close seconds this year and has shown she is ready to fire. Distance holds no questions but whether she will peak here or next week is the question. Either way, having come within a nose of Sincero in the Tramway last-start, looks in great form for her Rosehill debut.
#5 Torio’s Quest
- Shannon Stakes Odds: $5 into $4.40 Luxbet
Drawn mid-field in barrier five, has been a real market mover since Shannon Stakes betting opened yesterday. Trainer Brett Partelle likes the four-year-old for this second-up, but there second-up record isn’t great. What was great was Torio’s first-up run when beaten in the final stride by Master Of Design in the Sebring Sprint at Rosehill over 1300 metres, a race they jumped form an awkward barrier 11 of 14 draw for. That was their first look at Rosehill and they should have improved from that, Glen Boss is gone but Hughey Bowman jumps back on after riding them to victory in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas during the winter. Again, distance looks ideal ad does weight and they have class.
#7 Fast Clip
- Shannon Stakes Odds: $5 into $4.80 Luxbet
Waterhouse’s untapped Snippetson gelding is drawn a little wider with barrier eight but run a brilliant first-up third beaten only half a length in the Sebring last start from a double-digit gate. Rosehill record is commanding, they won the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes (200m) here on Golden Slipper Day and the distance at this stage in their prep looks perfect as they came within a nose of Blackie in the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes at this track and distance one run before their Tulloch success.
Fast Clip won’t be alone in the Shannon Stakes field on Saturday with three of their stablemates engaged for the race.
Waterhouse will also be represented by Caulfield Cup winner Descarado (barrier four) resuming for the season, Sydney Cup runner-up Older Than Time (barrier three) who needs longer than this and Al Maher five-year-old King Lionheart (barrier 10).
While Fast Clip is Waterhouse’s Shannon Stakes tip, at their $15 price and coming off a win at the track and distance a fortnight ago, King Lionheart is also worth a look in.
“Fast Clip has had the run under his belt and he’s gone ahead in leaps and bounds since his first-up run,” she said.
“And King Lionheart maybe at longer odds.”
