Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
After opening the clear favourite in the 2011 Caulfield Guineas Prelude betting for this Saturday, dual Group 1 winning colt Helmet looks to have some stiff competition for the top spot with punters crunching rival Golden Archer in the fixed-odds markets.
An elite level winner over the distance, the Peter Snowden-trained Helmet was initially quoted at a short-price of $2.50 through Luxbet to back up from their last-start third to Manawanui in the Golden Rose and win the $175,000 Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) this weekend.
Helmet, however, has since drifted right out to $3 to secure their fifth career success and win the traditional Caulfield Guineas lead-up with Peter Moody’s uncapped runner Golden Archer all the rage with the public.
Progressive Rock Of Gibraltar colt Golden Archer opened in Caulfield Guineas Prelude betting at a generous price of $5 but has been well-supported with their odds now having firmed into $3.60.
Golden Archer has the ideal barrier four draw for Saturday’s clash and comes off an eye-catching win over fellow Guineas Prelude hope Cross Of Gold in the Group 3 HDF McNeil Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on August 27.
Although they haven’t seen the 1400 metres before there is no questioning Golden Archer’s class or experience as they boast a commanding record of six wins and two minor placings, one of which was a second to glamour colt Sepoy in the Vain Stakes two starts back, from nine career runs.
A triple stakes winner and two-time Caulfield conqueror, Golden Archer has plenty of claims here with the distance the only query.
The two other single-priced Prelude contenders are both drifters in the betting with That’s The One out from $8.50 to $9 and Chase The Rainbow now at $6.50 after originally opening at $5.50.
Punters looking for more value in their Caulfield Guineas Prelude bets, however, will be taking note of the fact that five of Caulfield Guineas Prelude winners since 2000 started at $21 or over in the odds.
There are four horses at a blowout price that could add to this trend with Running Tall ($31) drawn in gate one, stakes winning Mossman colt Absalon ($21), classy Cranbourne-based colt Grand Britannia ($26) and $151 roughie of the field Isopach.
