One of the underrated races for punters on the Rosehill race programme this Saturday is the fourth event on the card, the 2011 Reginald Allen Handicap, where out of the six single-figure contenders in the betting markets Choice Words has emerged as the best bet.
The $100,000 Listed Reginald Allen Handicap (1400m) is due to jump at 2:40pm (local time) at Rosehill on Saturday and at this stage the field features 10 classy three-year-old fillies.
Out of the 10 hopefuls, six are at under double digits in the Reginald Allen odds at Luxbet with Anthony Cummings’ last-start Canterbury winner Shadow West, drawn in gate eight, the narrow $3.80 favourite after punters have hit her hard in the fixed odds slashing her price in from $4.40 in the past day.

Every filly in this field has claims including the Chris Waller-trained Ingham Magic ($4) coming off a win at the track, Gerald Ryan’s improving daughter of Fastnet Rock Fast Shanti ($7.50) and the untapped Peter Snowden-trained Disputes ($9) who is still a maiden after seven starts to date.

David Vandyke’s Choisir three-year-old Choice Words was originally also accepted to take on Golden Rose winner Manawanui in another Rosehill race this Saturday, the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m), but was an early withdrawal in favour of racing against her own sex in the Reginald Allen Handicap.
She has had just won start to date when she ran an eye-catching second, beaten only a quarter-length by Shadow West, in a 1200 metre sprint at Canterbury on September 7.
It was an excellent debut, Choice Words displaying a nice turn of foot to take the early lead before just being run down by the winner over the final 100 metres.
Choice Words will have learned a lot from her first under race conditions making her an exciting prospect this weekend and one Vandyke is happy to be saddling up with an eye to continuing her onto Saturday week’s $400,000 Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) on Epsom Super Saturday at Royal Randwick.
“In the Reginald Allen she’s going to be very hard horse to beat and I think if she can run competitively in that she’ll be looking to go towards the Flight Stakes,” Choice Word’s jockey Blake Spriggs said.
“She’s a very nice filly.
“She was impressive first-up, she jumped from barrier 11 (of 12) and ran 34 (seconds) for her first 600 metres and was still there at the end.
“Even though Shadow West beat me that day I think on Saturday she’ll be a lot better for the run.”
