2011 Caulfield Cup Second Declarations Leaves 80 Contenders

The likely 2011 Caulfield Cup field became a little clearer this afternoon with Racing Victoria taking second declarations for the famous staying showdown to run on October 15 this spring carnival.

December Draw

2011 Caulfield Cup favourite December Draw is one of 80 second acceptors

Today the number of gallopers heading towards a start in the $2.5 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) was cut from 117 at first declaration stage (September 6) to 80, up nine on the 71 Caulfield Cup second acceptors 12 months ago.

Notable omissions from the 2011 Caulfield Cup entries at second declaration stage include:

  • Littorio (Nigel Blackiston) – Retired from racing
  • Maluckyday (Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes) – Ruled out of remainder of spring due to virus
  • Anacheeva (Peter Moody) – Retired
  • Herculian Prince (Gai Waterhouse)
  • Once Were Wild (Gai Waterhouse)
  • Brazilian Pulse (Michael Moroney)
  • Pinker Pinker (Greg Eurell)
  • Secret Admirer (Grahame Begg)

While retirement and failed recent runs are the main reasons for connections not to pay the second acceptance fee for their Caulfield Cup entries, Pinker Pinker are Secret Admirer are still very much in-form but have had her spring plans changed to target the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 22.

Both were among the 59 second acceptors for the 2011 Cox Plate today.

Coolmore Flight Stakes winner Secret Admirer has had two runs for two devastatingly close seconds this season and will contest the Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on Saturday seeking her maiden win as a four-year-old.

Horses dominating the Caulfield Cup 2011 odds at Luxbet that are among the 80 still in contention include:

  • December Draw (Mark Kavanagh): Ace import has won four from five in Australia including the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield last Saturday which earned them a Caulfield Cup ballot exemption, moving into odds-on territory at this rate
  • Scarlett Lady (Graeme & Debbie Rogerson): Star Kiwi mare won the Doomben Roses – QLD Oaks double last season but has been well beaten in her two first-up this season, still her eighth to Lion Tamer in the Underwood last Saturday was credible considering she is unsuited to the 1800 metres and will continue to improve with more distance
  • At First Sight (Robert Hickmott): Originally didn’t seem worth a look for the Caulfield Cup until the Lloyd Williams-owned Galileo stallion ran a brilliant second to December Draw in the Naturalism, the 2400 metres looks ideal but seem a little short in the odds still
  • Lion Tamer (Murray Baker): One of the clear picks, should be near co-favourite with December Draw after their ultra impressive Group 1 Underwood Stakes win (1800m) last Saturday, Victoria Derby winner from last year has bucketloads of potential and doesn’t need it wet to win as they just showed, exempt from Caulfield Cup ballot
  • Midas Touch (Robert Hickmott): Another four-year-old Galileo stallion imported by Williams and prepared by Hickmott (like At First Sight), has been very progressive this month running third to Littorio in the Group 2 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) and third again last Saturday in the Underwood, like them better than their stablemate at shorter odds

Below is the updated BMW Caulfield Cup list of entries, ballot and weights as of second declaration stage today.

Third declarations for both the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate 2011 will be taken on Tuesday October 4, and again Races.com.au will publish the complete lists.
