Sepoy Sets Cranbourne Alight in Manikato Stakes 2011 Trial

Peter Snowden’s recently crowned Champion 2YO Colt for the 2010-11 racing season, Sepoy looked on track to take on the older horses in the 2011 Manikato Stakes at the end of the month with a blistering Cranbourne barrier trial on Monday morning.

Sepoy won a barrier trial at Cranbourne on Monday morning

While Australian Racehorse of the Year Black Caviar did not make an appearance at the Cranbourne hitouts, Sepoy still provided plenty of entertainment for the keen early birds this morning working the place down in the first heat.

Undefeated as a three-year-old with two first-up wins in the Vain and Danehill Stakes, Elusive Quality colt Sepoy was ridden by regular jockey Kerrin McEvoy, who made the trip down from Sydney to put the galloper through his paces over 800 metres.

Easily accounting for his eight rivals, Sepoy did the distance in a time of 44.90 seconds to beat home Jeteven by an easy two and a half lengths.

“I was pretty happy with him, the whole team were pretty happy and he ran pretty slick time,” McEvoy said after the trial.

“We broke 45 (seconds), so it was a good, solid, quick half-mile trail run at a pretty good speed.

“He’ll come on a heap from that as well.”

Sepoy’s next race will be on Friday September 30 when they will race under the lights at Moonee Valley in the $500,000 Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m).

McEvoy suggested they would benefit from a hitout at the Valley before the big race.

“Pete (Snowden) was keen to take him there, so I’m sure that’ll be talked about,” McEvoy said of next Tuesday’s Moonee Valley trails.

“It would be good if we did.”

A winner of seven of their eight starts including the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes – Golden Slipper double, Sepoy is yet to race either against older horses or at Moonee Valley making the Manikato their toughest test to date.

Early Manikato Stakes betting has Sepoy at the top of the odds with other top fancies including Gai Waterhouse’s glamour mare More Joyous and the Peter Moody-trained Kulgrinda.
