Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The Anthony Cummings-trained Strike The Stars appears to be the only serious contender in one of the key support races at Saturday’s George Main Stakes Day if the 2011 Gloaming Stakes betting odds are to go buy.
Scheduled to run as Rosehill Race 3 on Saturday, the $200,000 Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m) this year attracted a final field of 11 but there is only one contender the punters want.
In the Gloaming Stakes 2011 odds at Luxbet, Cummings’ improving Savabeel three-year-old Strike The Stars opened as the $2.20 favourite and has since been backed into $2.10.
Drawn in barrier five and due to be ridden by Hugh Bowman, Strike The Stars may still be a maiden after five career runs but they looked very impressive last-start when finishing one and a half lengths away third to Trusting and Group 1 winner My Kingdom Of Fife to finish third in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at Warwick Farm on September 3.
Saturday will be a huge step back in class for Strike The Stars, which is why they are so heavily supported in the Gloaming Stakes markets Luxbet.
However, this weekend Strike The Stars must rise from 50.5kg to 56.5kg, a sharp weight increase for a lightly-raced horse who at their only other start with 56.5kg ran seventh at Eagle Farm back in June.
The Gloaming Stakes will also be their first test at 1800 metres, and as they haven’t won at any distance under, it will either be hit or miss.
Cummings has them aimed at the $400,000 Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on Epsom Handicap Day, October 1.
Current Spring Champion Stakes 2011 odds at Luxbet have Strike the Stars rated at around $9 to win.
Occupying the second line of Gloaming Stakes betting at Luxbet are equal $5.50 second elects, Cocky Raider and Sangster.
Drawn in barrier six and 10 respectively, David Payne’s progressive Testa Rossa gelding Cocky Raider and Kiwi galloper Sangster, coming off a close second to Ambidexter in the Listed Ming Dynasty Handicap (1400m) at Warwick Farm on September 3, are the only other runners aside from Strike The Stars under double figures to win.
However, in an overpriced Gloaming Stakes field and market, there are a number of longer-priced outsider that have genuine claims of an upset include the John Thompson-trained Win For Wilson ($26) and Denwood ($26).
Win For Wilson is drawn ideally in barrier three with the Singapore-based Brazilian ace hoop Joao Moreira engaged for the ride, Thompson and owners from Patinack Farm impressed with Moreira’s winning ride aboard Trusting in the Chelmsford a fortnight ago.
The well-bred Encosta De Lago gelding was a very promising juvenile racing at Morphettville with their opening four starts producing a win, two Group second places and a black-type third.
As a three-year-old in Sydney, however, Win For Wilson has failed in their opening two when fifth to subsequent Golden Rose winner Manawanui in the Group 3 Up & Coming Stakes (1300m) at Warwick Farm last month and then seventh last-start in the Ming Dynasty.
A far better draw on Saturday and the step up in distance brings Win For Wilson right into contention.
Queensland raider Denwood is another excellent roughie to add into your exotic Gloaming Stakes bets at Luxbet, the Darryl Hansen-trained Greenwood Lake gelding still a maiden after nine starts, but with an excellent place record (two seconds and four thirds) can finish in the money here.
Mackay-based Hansen is hoping to see enough from Denwood on the weekend to warrant going onto the Spring Champion Stakes.
“I’ll see how he goes on Saturday but if he runs well he’ll head towards the Spring Champion Stakes,” Hansen said.
“He’s been racing well but he’s crying out for more ground and I can’t find any suitable races for him in Queensland.”
