Right Weight For Raspberries in Epsom Handicap 2011

Peter Snowden has indicated that the nice light weight yesterday’s Cameron Handicap winner Raspberries is allocated for the 2011 Espom Handicap makes the Group 1 showdown a viable next-up option for the progressive mare.

Scheduled to run at Royal Randwick on Saturday October 1, the $500,000 Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) is one of the key Sydney Spring Racing Carnival showdowns and betting on the race is already open at Australia’s No. 1 online bookmaker Luxbet.

Epsom Handicap 2011 odds are currently lead by $5.50 co-favourites Sincero and Secret Admirer, but on Wednesday a longer-priced hopeful in the form of Lonhro four-year-old Raspberries emerged as a genuine contender with her gritty win in the $150,000 Group 3 Cameron Handicap (1500m) at Newcastle.

Yesterday Raspberries ($7.50) showed her last-start win over Altius in a 1500 metre handicap at Rosehill was no fluke when she stepped up to Group company and emerged victorious in a thrilling photo finish with eventual runner-up, the Gai Waterhouse-trained Light Brigade ($12).

In a result for the bookies, the winning Cameron Handicap trifecta was finished off by $101 roughie Kauna who ran a length away third holding off the beaten favourite, Neeson ($2.80) who was a further quarter-length away fourth.

After the win, Snowden indicated that with Raspberries allocated just 52kg for the Epsom Handicap, he would consider backing her up in the elite level.

Raspberries could also be Melbourne Cup Carnival-bound with the $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day, Saturday October 29, also on the horizon.

“She has 52 kilos in the Epsom so we might head that way then send her to Melbourne for races like the Myer Classic,” Snowden said.

“If I had started talking about the Myer for her even a month ago I would have given myself an uppercut.

“The improvement this mare has made has been phenomenal and I really wish I knew what the secret is, although adding blinkers has had a big influence.

“I was originally aiming her at the (Listed) Belle Of The Turf (Stakes) at Gosford (on October 16) but we might have to re-think the plan.

“She might still start in it but the Epsom now will be her mission.”

Raspberries is currently paying a generous $21 in the futures Epsom Handicap betting markets at Luxbet, making her a nice outside tip to take on the favourites.
