2011 Newcastle Gold Cup Odds Tip Gai for Success

Sydney’s leading lady of racing Gai Waterhouse is being tipped to win back-to-back editions of the Newcastle Gold Cup this afternoon with the money rolling in for her contender, Essence Of Success.

Gai Waterhouse seeks back-to-back wins in the Newcastle Gold Cup this afternoon

The highlight event of the two-day Newcastle Gold Cup Carnival is the $185,000 Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m) running as Newcastle Race 7 at 4:40pm today.

Twelve months ago Waterhouse took out the feature with Stratofortress and this afternoon she’s back with her in-form Encosta De Lago mare Essence Of Success.

The five-year-old is the 2011 Newcastle Gold Cup market mover at Luxbet, odds on Essence Of Success firming in from $4.60 to $4.

Set to jump from barrier 12 of 16 with Chris Munce in the mount, Essence Of Success is one of the 53kg lightweights of the Newcastle Gold Cup field and has been in top form this preparation.

After winning a 2200 metres handicap at Warwick Farm with 56.5kg on her back on August 20, Essence Of Success last ran a game second behind fellow Newcastle Gold Cup rival The Verminator in the Listed Wyong Gold Cup (2100m) on September 2.

With The Verminator’s trainer Chris Waller expressing concerns over how his 2011 Melbourne Cup-bound galloper will handle the Newcastle track conditions this afternoon, the punters have been getting right behind Essence Of Success to turn the tables on her last-start conqueror and emerge as the 2011 Newcastle Gold Cup winner.

“I’m reluctant to run him on a good track because he does jar up,” Waller said of The Verminator.

Opening as the Newcastle Gold Cup betting favourite at Luxbet, The Verminator has since drifted out from $4 to $4.20.

Along with Essence Of Success, other 2011 Newcastle Gold Cup market movers include:

  • #8 Green Moon – $5.50 into $5 Luxbet: Note jockey change, Brenton Avdulla to replace Nick Hall. Robert Hickmott’s import has good form last-start when they ran second behind Caulfield Cup favourite December Draw over 2000 metres at Flemington on September 3, nicely weighted but distance a query.
  • #10 Raeburn – $41 into $35 Luxbet: Brian Smith’s Queensland raider looks a nice roughie to add into exotic bets. Will need to avoid getting caught on the inside from alley one and has to improve about four to five lengths on their Wyong Cup eighth, but they were blocked for a run there so can forgive and look back to their excellent form in Brisbane around this distance.
