Big early money on Stephen Farley’s impressive Group 1 galloper Sincero in the George Main Stakes 2011 odds make the Stradbroke Handicap a hero a chance of firming into odds-on territory before jump time at Rosehill on Saturday.
The $350,000 Group 1 George Main Stakes (1500m) is the feature race on the bumper eight-race Rosehill programme this Saturday, the small eight-horse final field lead by Farley’s ultra consistent four-year-old Sincero.
Despite drawing the far outside barrier for Saturday, Sincero’s gritty first-up win in the Group 3 Tramway Handicap (1400m) at Warwick Farm on September 3 saw them open at the top of the 2011 George Main Stakes betting markets at Luxbet at a quote of $2.70.
Since markets opened, the punters have jumped on the Sincero betting bandwagon and the favourite has now come right in to $2.40 to become this Saturday’s George Main Stakes winner, boosting the claims to continue on for a shot at the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 22.
Saturday is Sincero’s first weight-for-age assignment and they will carry 58.5kg.
While Sincero was a 50.5kg lightweight when winning the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm back in June, the Umatilla gelding is certainly no stranger to the big weights either including their last-start victory with 58kg.
“It is his first test at weight-for-age but he’s carried big weights before,” Farley said.
“He had 58 in the Tramway and he won with 60 and a half one day (over the Randwick mile on Boxing Day last year).”
There are two other horses at single-figure odds in the George Main Stakes Luxbet markets:
#6 Ilovethiscity – $4.80 into $4.60 Luxbet
- Form Says: Drawn in barrier six, Grahame Begg’s 2011 Cox Plate hopeful can be hit and miss, ran second first-up behind in an encouraging performance in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) but had no excuses when eighth last start in the Sebring Sprint. Back up in distance will suit.
- Trainer Says: “He’s right for the George Main Stakes on Saturday, the 1500 metres is perfect at this stage of his preparation” – G. Begg
#7 Sacred Choice – $7.50 Luxbet
- Form Says: Multiple elite level winning mare, won the 2010 Myer Classic and this year’s Doncaster Mile, both in the wet. Joe Pride’s six-year-old has top form on Heavy tracks, but was far from disgraced when fifth to Trusting in the Chelmsford over the mile a fortnight ago – 1500 metres may be a bit short, but gets blinkers on to sharpen over the distance.
- Trainer Says: “Blinkers are a big plus for her, she’s a different horse with them on. We’re hoping she’s going to improve as much into her third run as she did last time (when a length away third in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes over the mile at Warwick Farm in March)” – J. Pride
Following the top trio in the George Main Stakes field are then evergreen eight-year-old Black Piranha and the Chris Waller-trained Triple Elegance on $10, John Thompson-trained Railway Stakes winner Gathering paying $11, Peter Moody’s handy mare Do Ra Mi at nice odds of $14 and then $41 roughie of the race Zara Dancer from the New Zealand stables of Bruce Wallace.
