Newcastle Gold Cup 2011 Field & Betting Preview

Tomorrow the 2011 Newcastle Gold Cup will take place as the feature spring showdown held at Newcastle Racecourse, a quality field of major carnival contenders ready to face off and stake their claims to continue onto the bigger and better things this season.

Set to run as Newcastle Race 7 on Thursday, the $185,000 Group 3 Tooheys New Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m) originally attracted a capacity final field of 16 runners plus one emergency.

After the early scratching of #1 Ironstein and the emergency, #17 Rodeo Playboy, there are 15 gallopers left in contention.

In the Newcastle Gold Cup 2011 odds at Luxbet, three horses dominate the betting with The Verminator currently the narrow $4 favourite.

Chris Waller’s five-year-old Jeune gelding has really begun to hit their stride over the past season.

Recent runs include a brave fourth to Warrior Within in the Listed Grafton Cup (2350m) in July, a devastatingly close third to Foreteller in the Premier’s Cup Prelude (1800m) when tightened for room at Rosehill on August 13 and another close third this time to Break Card in the Listed Premier’s Cup (1800m) on August 27.

Luck in the run finally went The Verminator’s way last-start, the Melbourne Spring Carnival-bound galloper able to take out the Listed Wyong Gold Cup (2100m) by an easy two and a half lengths on September 2.

Waller has The Verminator nominated for both the $2.5 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 15 and is hoping the horse continues to progress all the way through to Flemington on the first Tuesday of November for the $6.2 million Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m).

The latest 2011 Caulfield Cup markets at Luxbet have The Verminator as a $101 roughie and they are even juicer in the Melbourne Cup 2011 odds at $126.

The other two top-rated Newcastle Gold Cup betting elects are Wyong Gold Cup runner-up Essence Of Success at $4.60, and market mover the Robert Hickmott-trained import Green Moon in from $5.50 to $4.80 through Luxbet despite having drawn the far outside barrier who come off a second to early Caulfield and Melbourne Cups fancy December Draw at Flemington last Saturday.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse is confident Essence Of Success can turn up tomorrow and turn the tables on The Verminator following their loss to them at Wyong last week and hand her back-to-back wins in the Newcastle Gold Cup after Stratofortress took it out 12 months ago.

Other gallopers in the Newcastle Gold Cup field with claims at more generous odds at Luxbet include Ben Ahrens’ Beaudesert raider, Caloundra Cup winner Spechenka ($10), the Bart Cummings-trained last-start Rosehill winner Tamanu Park ($11) and Brian Smith’s veteran Zabeel eight-year-old Hume ($14).
