Jim Conlan’s Cranbourne galloper Rekindled Interest returned to the winners’ stall on Saturday claiming an upset win in a muddling Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes, staking their claims to win Moonee Valley’s showcase race of the year, the 2011 Cox Plate.
Four-year-old Redoute’s Choice four-year-old Rekindled Interest was the impressive winner of the Group 2 AAMI Vase (2040m) at Moonee Valley last spring and on the weekend made it two-from-two at the Valley.
Third-up for the season after two promising Group runs in Melbourne, Rekindled Interest went out in the $300,000 Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) rated only a $7 shot at upsetting dual defending champion Whobegotyou.
Despite having drawn the extreme outside gate in the 10-horse race, Rekindled Interest was given a gun ride by jockey Dwayne Dunn and was able to defeat 2011 Melbourne Cup hopeful Alcopop ($15) by a length.
Mark Kavanagh’s odds-on favourite Whobegotyou ($1.65) failed to become just the second horse in history to win three successive Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes, and could only manage to finish a further three-quarters of a length away third after an unlucky run.

“If you have a short-priced favourite you are going to get no favours from the other jockeys,” Kavanagh said when assessing the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes.
“Everyone needs an ounce of luck to win a race.
“There was nowhere for him (Whobegotyou) to go.
“The other blokes made sure they made it tough for him.”
Whobegotyou, however, has managed to retain their favouritism in the futures betting for the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) on October 22.
Cox Plate odds at Luxbet are topped by the ‘Whobe’ at a quote of $7, while after their eye-catching performance and obvious liking for the Moonee Valley track, Rekindled Interest has firmed into the $8 second elect after earlier sitting at double-figures.
Conlan named the $500,000 Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on October 2 as the likely final preparatory run for Rekindled Interest heading into the Cox Plate 2011.
“There’s two ways, he’ll either go the Turnbull, which is a pretty good race for him, or the other thing is, I reckon he’s right where he needs to be at the moment and there’s a slight thought about maybe this (the Dato) would be his last run going into it (the Cox Plate),” Conlan explained.
“The timing’s not right there, but he is ready and he’s very clean winded.”
Dunn, who has been aboard Rekindled Interest for their five most recent runs of a 10-start career to date, said the Cox Plate would be a tough test but that the horse was well-suited to tackle it.
“He’s climbing a pretty big mountain,” Dunn said.
“He loves this track, he runs really well over that (Cox Plate) distance (of 2040m), I’d say Jim would be more than happy with the way he’s progressed.”
