Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Last Saturday’s Sebring Sprint winner at Rosehill, Master Of Design, has been tipped as a genuine chance for the upcoming 2011 Epsom Handicap by their trainer David Payne.
Going out as a $21 roughie in the markets for the $200,000 Group 2 Sebring Sprint (1300m), one of the major support races on the Golden Rose Day programme and formerly known as the Theo Marks Stakes, Master Of Design went on to become the longest-priced winner at the meeting, a win for Luxbet punters that took a chance!
A nicely-bred Redoute’s Choice stallion from Last Tycoon mare Urge To Merge, Master Of Design significantly increased their stud value with the Group race win.
The lightly-raced six-year-old, who was famously purchased for $2.1 million as a yearling back in 2007 and formerly trained by Lee Freedman, was having just their 12th career start on Saturday and third at stakes level.
Having come off a disappointing ninth to Zaratone in the Listed Starlight Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on August 13, after which they pulled up lame, Master Of Design showed they were back to full fitness when they were able to beat home a crack field to the white post.
On the line Master Of Design had a half-neck to spare over Brett Partelle’s fast-finishing Torio’s Quest ($7.50) while the Gai Waterhouse-trained Fast Clip was just a further quarter length away for third ($6) ahead of the fourth-placed Pinwheel ($4).
Race favourite Ilovethiscity ($3.70) was somewhat disappointing when crossing eighth, but was still only two and a half away from the winner.
Payne is now seriously considering a run in the $500,000 Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Randwick on October 1 for Master Of Design depending on their progress.
The horse is currently one of 121 Epsom Handicap nominations and is rated a $51 outsider in the Epsom Handicap 2011 odds at Luxbet.
“He’s a very serious racehorse,” Payne said.
“He’s won a Group Two now but if he can get a Group One then he’ll be worth millions as a stallion.
“There’s got to be a Group One for him somewhere, whether it is this spring or perhaps the autumn remains to be seen.
“The Epsom is probably the race and we would go into it without another run.”
Runner-up in the Sebring Sprint, Queensland Guineas winner Torio’s Quest looked in terrific form ahead of the spring majors with their gallant run from an awkward gate.
Torio’s Quest is rated a $15 chance at Luxbet for the Espom Handicap after Saturday’s performance, but Wyong-based Partelle said they would not accept for the Royal Randwick feature and plans to shoot for the stars with the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 22 the grand aim.
“That is actually what I wanted to see,” Partelle said of Torio’s Quest run on Saturday.
“Another couple of strides and he probably wins.
“We are looking at the Cox Plate, so we will decide wither to stay here for the (Group 2) Shannon (Stakes over 1500 metres at Rosehill on September 24) or go to Melbourne for the (Group 1 Sir) Rupert Clarke (Stakes over 1400 metres at Caulfield) in a fortnight.
“The Epsom is definitely out for him because we are looking at the Cox Plate.”
Cox Plate 2011 betting at Luxbet has Torio’s Quest as a firming contender, still at a very generous quote of $35.
Meanwhile, Epsom Handicap 2011 markets are lead by $6 co-favourites Sincero and Secret Admirer.
Ilovethiscity is still well-liked despite their run on the weekend and is paying $11, equal odds with My Kingdom Of Fife.
Fast Clip, third in the Sebring Sprint, also lost few admirers in the Epsom markets and is rated a $17 chance through Luxbet.
“Fast Clip worked home very well and he is on target,” a pleased Gai Waterhouse said after the Sebring Sprint result.
“I think the Epsom is probably going to fall away and it will give a lot of horses their chances.”
Weights for the Epsom Handicap are due to be released later today, which will likely impact on the betting markets at Luxbet.
