This Saturday the mares-only Stocks Stakes will take place at Moonee Valley as one of the feature showdowns on the Cox Plate Preview Day programme, and one hopeful that could prove a great value 2011 Stocks Stakes betting tip is Lady Lynette.
Connections are giving now seven-year-old Lady Lynette the chance to go two better than her third place finish in the $200,000 Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m) last year, winner Avienus also back for another crack, and Australia’s leading online bookmaker Luxbet have her rated a $7 chance to do so.
The always consistent Lady Lynette certainly has claims after her game second-up fourth to Stocks Stakes rival Pinker Pinker in the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) at Flemington last Saturday, but she also faces a quality field on a short turnaround.
Co-trainer Scott Brunton, however, is confident Lady Lynette is right on the mark and ready to give shorter-priced favourites Pinker Pinker ($4.40) and the Peter Moody-trained King’s Rose ($2.60) a run for their money.
“I hope we’re at the right mark with her and she can run a good race,” he said.
“She ran good sections in that race (the Let’s Elope) and we’re expecting a forwards showing on Saturday.”
Certainly the Moonee Valley track is the place for Lady Lynette to strut her stuff as she has had six previous starts at the course that have included wins in the Group 3 Teiso Stakes (1600m) on Cox Plate Day for the past two years.
In a 2011 Stocks Stakes field bursting with Group winning mares there can only be one winner, and although Lady Lynette has a nice record and plenty of potential, race favourite King’s Rose is hard to go past for the victory.

While the highly-spruiked Moody mare Lights Of Heaven got thumped no excuses last Saturday in the Makybe Diva Stakes, King’s Rose is set to come out and get the punters back on favour this weekend.
A Group One winning mare in her homeland New Zealand, King’s Rose made a brilliant Australian race debut on August 27 running down Hearts Of Dream to score a final-stride victory in the Group 2 Memsie Stakes (1400m) from an awkward gate.
Here’s why she can go back-to-back and win the Stocks Stakes:
- Best Win Rate of the field with 53.85%
- Undefeated over the mile with two wins including the Group 1 NZ Thousand Guineas
- Drawn in barrier seven, three better than last start
- Back to mares-only after taking on the boys in the Memsie
There are 13 horses left in the 2011 Spotless Stocks Stakes field after the early scratching of #4 Charlie’s Queen.
