Whobe-Got the Goods in Cox Plate 2011 Preview Day Odds

Mark Kavanagh’s gallant weight-for-age hero Whobegotyou has unsurprisingly opened as the odds-on favourite to win the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes 2011 at Moonee Valley this Saturday, the traditional preparatory spring run for gallopers heading towards the iconic Cox Plate.

Whobegotyou has opened the odds-on Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes 2011 favourite

Headlining a crack nine-race programme, the $300,000 Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) is scheduled to run as Moonee Valley Race 7 on Saturday and Whobegotyou leads a quality 10-horse field in the feature.

Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes betting opened at Australia’s favourite online bookmaker Luxbet today, dual defending champion Whobegotyou the $1.55 favourite to secure an unprecedented third straight victory in the race since it became a weight-for-age event.

History shows one three-time consecutive Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes winner, Shorengo (1968-70), but that was when the race was run under handicap conditions.

Street Cry six-year-old Whobegotyou comes into the Dato on the back of an excellent first-up win over one-time Caulfield Cup 2011 favourite Lights Of Heaven in the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on August 13 where they carted a hefty 59kg to victory with Damien Oliver in the mount.

This weekend Whobe will again be ridden with Oliver, the most successful Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes winning hoop in history with four victories to date, at that weight as they attempt to become just the third horse since 1985 to take out the Lawrence (formerly Liston) Stakes – Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes double.

The last horse to complete the double was Lad Of The Manor (2005) while the most recent galloper to attempt the feat was the recently crowned Queensland Horse of the Year Shoot Out who ran third behind Whobegotyou and Typhoon Tracy in the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes 12 months ago.

Whobegotyou is again heading towards a start in Moonee Valley’s premier event, the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) on October 22.

Having run sixth in 2009 and third last year, both times to the former Bart Cummings-trained champion So You Think, Whobegotyou is this year’s Cox Plate betting favourite currently at a quote of $7.50 through Luxbet.

While no Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes winner has managed to continue on to win either the Caulfield Cup or Melbourne Cup during the same spring since 1975, the race has been an excellent Cox Plate guide.

Eight horses in recent history have managed to complete the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes – Cox Plate winning double, the latest being El Segundo (2007).

Starting as the punters pick has also historically been an advantage in the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes field, nine of the last 12 winners having saluted after jumping at a price of $3.20 or shorter, six of which were the favourites.

While all the rage is on Whobe in barrier five, there are nine other Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes acceptors all equally as keen to prove their spring claims with a win in Saturday’s highlight.

Only one other runner is at a single-figure quote to win the Dato, the Jim Conlan-trained Rekindled Interest ($7.50 into $7 Luxbet) who claimed an excellent victory at the Valley last spring in the Group 2 AAMI Vase (2040m).

Following in the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes betting markets are the Lloyd Williams-owned grey Linton ($11) in the inside alley, Greg Eurell’s consistent Cranbourne galloper Red Colossus ($13), last-start Penny Edition Stakes winner Alcopop ($14) and the David Hayes-trained Spacecraft ($16).

Looking at the stats, a number of these gallopers have genuine claims of an upset having come through the Group 2 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on August 27, won by Peter Moody’s mare King’s Rose who will jump favourite in another Moonee Valley race this Saturday – the $200,000 Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m).

The Memsie Stakes has proved one of the best indicators for the Dato over the years producing 14 of the past 20 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes winners.

Of the Dato candidates this year Red Colossus (3rd), Rekindled Interest (4th) and Linton (7th) had their final lead-ups in the Memsie.
