Whobegotyou has a stranglehold over the 2011 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes markets for this Saturday, Mark Kavanagh’s dual defending champion odds-on for a successive hat-trick in the Moonee Valley showpiece, but connections of rival Red Colossus are warning not to discount their contender so quickly.
011Having won the past two editions of the weight-for-age event, coming off an excellent first-up win in the Lawrence Stakes, drawing well with barrier five and due to be ridden by the most successful jockey in this race’s history – Damien Oliver, Whobegotyou sits top of the odds at Luxbet for this year’s $300,000 Group 2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m).
At a current quote of $1.55 in the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes betting at Luxbet, Whobegotyou certainly is the horse to beat, but can he be beaten?
While taking down the popular weight-for-age hero is a colossal task, Cranbourne-based horseman Greg Eurell believes he has the galloper to do it with his aptly named Testa Rossa gelding Red Colossus.
“Certainly Whobegotyou is going to be tough to beat but our bloke is probably the best he’s been in himself,” Eurell said.
Winner of the Group 3 Victoria handicap (1400m) at Caulfield back in April, Red Colossus resumed for the spring with a genuinely eye-catching performance on August 27.
Jumping from the inside alley, Red Colossus raced first-up against a crack field in the Group 2 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield and came within a length of the winner King’s Rose when finishing third.
Second-up on Saturday Eurell said that Red Colossus would have no excuses, even saying that drawing slightly awkwardly with gate nine would suit them better than their rails draw in the Memsie.
“He hasn’t missed a beat,” Eurell said.
“He went into the Memsie very fit and well and he’s come out of it very well.
“You wouldn’t even know he’s gone around.
“He’s just in very good fettle, the horse. He’s got to the point where he’s matured quite a lot.
“It (the barrier) will give him the opportunity to blend into the race.”
Red Colossus is currently at $13 to upset Whobegotyou in the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes betting at Luxbet.
Two other horses have firmed in their price since markets opened on the Moonee Valley Race 7 field, Robert Hickmott’s maturing grey stayer Linton ($11 into $10) and last year’s AAMI Vase winner Rekindled Interest ($7.50 into $7).
