Shoot Off and Running in 2011 Kingston Town Stakes Field

Graeme Rogerson’s Queensland Derby winner Shootoff returns to the track this Saturday for the Kingston Town Stakes 2011 at Rosehill, the four-year-old looking to shrug off their first-up failure and restore form ahead of the spring majors.

Shootoff will look to return to form in the 2011 Kingston Town Stakes

The $125,000 Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes (2000m) is one of the best races on the Rosehill race-card this weekend, Saturday’s meeting headlined by the start of Group One racing for the season with the 2011 Golden Rose.

Attracting a final field of 15 hopefuls, the 2011 Kingston Town Stakes line-up this year features a number of Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate chances including Duelled four-year-old Shootoff.

In career best form last season, Shootoff hit the headlines with their Group 1 Queensland Derby win over 2400 metres at Eagle Farm on June 11.

They resumed at Warwick Farm on August 20, but failed in the Heavy track conditions and failed to beat home any rivals when crossing over 28 lengths away from Group 2 Warwick Stakes winner Pinwheel.

Rogerson is hopeful that Saturday will give Shootoff (Michael Walker, barrier 11) the chance to bounce back ahead of a spring campaign likely targeting the $2.5 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 15.

The latest 2011 Caulfield Cup odds at Luxbet following yesterday’s first declarations have Shootoff as a $61 chance.

Other Kingston Town Stakes 2011 acceptors looking to improve their Caulfield Cup claims this weekend including the Robert Hickmott-trained Mourayan and Chris Waller’s improving Redoute’s Choice four-year-old Altius.

The Lloyd Williams-owned Mourayan will jump the 58.5kg top-weight of the Kingston Town Stakes field from barrier three with Hugh Bowman aboard, the multiple Group 1 placegetter coming off a close fourth in the Listed Premier’s Cup (1800m) at Rosehill on August 27.

Premier’s Cup winner Break Card and runner-up Praecido are both also engaged for the Kingston Town on Saturday.

Gerald Ryan’s classy Danzero mare Break Card will look to go back-to-back at the track from barrier four with Jay Ford engaged.

The David Payne-trained Praecido has also come up trumps in the Kingston Town Stakes barrier draw, last year’s Victoria Derby runner-up jumping from gate two with Glen Boss in the saddle.

A progressive and promising stayer, Praecido has the ambitious spring aim of going all the way to the $6.2 million Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on Tuesday November 1.

Melbourne Cup 2011 betting futures at Luxbet have Praecido as a $101 roughie, that price sure to be slashed with a good run on the weekend.

Out wider in the field are the likes of triple Cups winner Ironstein (barrier 12) and the David Hayes’ import Rebel Soldier (14) who will be ridden by boom Kiwi apprentice James McDonald.

Below is the full Kingston Town Stakes field, odds on which will open shortly at our preferred online bookmaker Luxbet.
