After the announcement of the Golden Rose 2011 six-horse field on Tuesday, betting on the $1 million feature is dominated by odds-on favourite Smart Missile and the only galloper rated a chance of upsetting them, Helmet.
The hype building up to the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill this Saturday is nearing fever-pitch and the betting markets at Luxbet on the feature are heating up as well.
Since Golden Rose 2011 odds were released Anthony Cummings’ unbeaten son of Fastnet Rock, Smart Missile, has held a stranglehold over the markets.
An exciting colt that claimed the scalp of Sepoy last season, Smart Missile missed their chance to win an elite level as a juvenile with their sensational scratching from the Golden Slipper barriers.
Cummings and connections, however, are confident that the galloper is ready for Saturday’s showdown stating that Smart Missile is all but unbeatable in the Golden Rose despite it being his first second-up test and maiden start over the distance.
“I think with the natural improvement Smart Missile has made, he can beat them more easily,” Cummings said.
“I have no doubts about him running 1400 metres and I will be very surprised if he doesn’t win.”
The punters are confident too, Smart Missile the firming favourite in from their opening quote of $1.85 to become the Golden Rose winner at Luxbet into $1.80.
Helmet is the next shortest-priced contender, Peter Snowden’s two time Group 1 winning colt also a Luxbet market mover in from $4.40 to $4.20.
The only horse in the 2011 Golden Rose field to have run and won over the 1400 metres, Helmet became a Group 1 winner in the AJC Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) last season going on to also win the Group 1 Champagne Stakes over the Randwick mile.
Drawn in barrier four, one inside of the favourite, Helmet will have blinkers added to his gear for the first time on Saturday in the hope it will sharpen them up and see them improve from their close-up third behind Smart Missile in the Run To The Rose on August 27.
Smart Missile’s trainer is predicting a close finish on Saturday, and the Golden Rose markets reflect this with all but one of the contenders at single-figure odds through Luxbet.
“There is only going to be four lengths from first to last in the race,” Cummings forecasted.
Behind the top two picks the Golden Rose contenders in order of odds are emphatic last-start Group 3 Sydney winner Manawanui ($7), the flying Lionel Cohen-trained Aeronautical ($8.50), John O’Shea’s last-start Run To The Rose runner-up Foxwedge ($9) and Scott Aspery’s outsider Flight Of Pegasus ($41).
