Smart Missile Tops 2011 Caulfield Guineas First Declarations

Racing Victoria has today taken first declarations for four of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival’s major showdowns including those for the Caulfield Guineas 2011, Anthony Cummings’ unbeaten colt Smart Missile heading the list of three-year-olds still in contention for the October classic.

Smart Missile

Smart Missile is on track for the Golden Rose - Caulfield Guineas double this spring

The $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) is scheduled to take place on October 8, the same day Peter Moody’s sprint queen Black Caviar is due to resume racing and attempt to equal Phar Lap’s record of 14-successive victories when she runs in the Schillaci Stakes.

Caulfield Guineas nominations featured 279 hopefuls.

That number was dramatically cut today, 92 horses now vying for a spot in the capacity 16-starter plus four emergency The Age Caulfield Guineas final field.

Topping the Caulfield Guineas 2011 entries and odds are Smart Missile ($5) and the Peter Snowden-trained Helmet.

Luxbet punters and fans get an early glimpse at the Caulfield Guineas claims of this exciting duo on Saturday when they face off in the opening Group 1 race of the season – the $1 million Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens.

Along with Smart Missile, the only galloper to get the better of Golden Slipper winner Sepoy to date, Cummings has three other horses on way to the Caulfield Guineas including his Savabeel gelding Strike The Stars who ran an eye-catching third behind Trusting and My Kingdom Of Fife in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at Warwick Farm last weekend.

Helmet, already a dual Group 1 winner thanks to juvenile victories in the AJC Sires Produce Stakes and Champagne Stakes last season, is one of five Caulfield Guineas chances for Darley’s supremo trainer Snowden.

Snowden’s other genuine contender is Ambidexter, the emerging Commands colt taking out the Listed Ming Dynasty Handicap (1400m) last Saturday.

Other early favourites in the Caulfield Guineas odds at Luxbet that remain in contention include lightly-raced colt Moment Of Change, the David Hayes-trained Cross Of Gold, Golden Rose runner Manawanui, consistent Dash For Cash colt Chase The Rainbow and the Bart Cummings-trained Do You Think.

Moment Of Change is one of five Caulfield Guineas entries for Moody, Victoria’s ace trainer attempting to win back-to-back Caulfield Guineas’ following the success of Anacheeva in the feature last spring.

Moody’s other chances lie in Godspeed, Highly Recommended, Huegill and last-start Group 3 HDF McNeil Stakes winner Golden Archer.

The largest number of Caulfield Guineas first declarations belongs to Patinack Farm head trainer John Thompson whose contingent of eight is headed by Boys On Tour.

Below is the full list of current Caulfield Guineas 2011 entries, the list to be culled again come second declaration stage on Tuesday September 20.
