Littorio Leads Caulfield Cup 2011 Ballot & First Declarations

Connections of last Saturday’s upset Makybe Diva Stakes winner have opted to keep Littorio in contention for the 2011 Caulfield Cup, the seven-year-old now sitting at the top of the ballot for the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival’s $2.5 million handicap showdown next month.

Littorio is the only horse still in contention for the 2011 Caulfield Cup to be exempt from elimination

Racing Victoria took first declarations for the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2040m), $3.5 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m), Caulfield Guineas and Thousand Guineas today.

After earning a ballot exemption into the Caulfield Cup 2011 field on October 15 thanks to their first-up Flemington victory in the Makybe Diva, last year’s Group 1 The BMW winner Littorio is the only one of the 117 horses still in contention, cut from 237 at nomination stage, to be exempt from elimination.

Despite being No. 1 on the ballot, Littorio is far from being the 2011 Caulfield Cup betting favourite, Luxbet paying $21 for them to win.

Caulfield Cup odds are currently lead by $9 co-favourites December Draw and Scarlett Lady.

Mark Kavanagh’s exciting import December Draw took their Australian race record to three wins (all at Flemington) from four starts last Saturday, but is one of 44 horses still yet to pass the first elimination clause for the Caulfield Cup.

Savabeel mare Scarlett Lady, from the New Zealand-based stables of Graeme Rogerson, emerged as a genuine Melbourne Spring Carnival contender last season when she travelled down under to take out the Doomben Roses – QLD Oaks double.

She resumed on August 27 at Hastings with a solid effort in the Challenge Stakes and is out to emulate the sensational Ethereal, the former Kiwi sensation taking out the same Brisbane Winter Carnival double in 2001 before returning to Australia in the spring to salute in both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, making her trainer Sheila Laxon the first female trainer to prepare a Melbourne Cup winner.

Reigning Caulfield Cup winner Descarado has defected, but was kept in contention for the 2011 Cox Plate along with 95 other weight-for-age hopefuls.

Descarado’s trainer, the very likable Gai Waterhouse, still has six chances of securing back-to-back Caulfield Cups having paid first acceptance fees for Herculian Prince, Once Were Wild, Tullamore, Older Than Time, Sweetest Melody and Western Symbol.

The shortest-priced of Waterhouse’s contingent in the latest Caulfield Cup betting markets at Luxbet is Brisbane Cup winner Tullamore at a quote of $26.

Other horses well-supported in the futures odds for the Caulfield Cup this year that are still entered include Peter Moody’s Zabeel mare Lights Of Heaven, Michael Moroney’s well-performing import Glass Harmonium, dual Classics winner Shamrocker, last year’s Melbourne Cup runner-up Maluckyday and the Chris Waller-trained My Kingdom Of Fife.

There are still eight international raiders on the Caulfield Cup path, including a quartet from leading European horseman Luca Cumani.

Cumani’s Caulfield Cup 2011-bound horses are recent Goodwood winner Drunken Sailor, 2008 Melbourne Cup second placegetter Bauer, former Chilean stayer Sahara Sun and Manighar.

Rounding out the Northern Hemisphere-trained Caulfield Cup hopefuls are defending Melbourne Cup winner Americain who sits as the 58kg topweight, fellow French-trained galloper Dunade, the Brian Ellison-trained Saptapadi and Hong Kong galloper Mighty High from the stables of esteemed trainer John Moore.

Below is the updated Caulfield Cup 2011 ballot after first declarations.
