Freedman’s First City Winner Eyes Caulfield Guineas 2011

Anthony Freedman may have unearthed a genuine 2011 Caulfield Guineas contender after his up-and-coming colt Specter scored a narrow stakes victory at Flemington on Saturday, handing the horseman his maiden metropolitan winner.

Betting markets at Luxbet for the $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m), an early Melbourne Spring Carnival classic for three-year-olds on October 8, are currently lead by crack Sydney contenders Smart Missile ($5) and Helmet ($6.50).

Freedman, who recently took over head training duties after his brother Lee stood down as the stable’s leader earlier this year, is hopeful that his young galloper Specter, currently a $31 chance in the Caulfield Guineas odds, can work their way into the mix.

“We’ll just see where he fits in,” Freedman said.

“These horses (three-year-olds) are probably short of the Sydney horses but we’re here and we’ll probably give him his chance.”

Having just their third career start on the weekend, Specter ($16) was impressive when jockey Nicholas Hall rode them to a narrow victory over Chase The Rainbow ($11) while the Mick Price-trained Secret Hills ($10) finished a close third in the $125,000 Listed Henry Bucks Best Dressed Stakes (1400m).

Specter will now be prepared with the Caulfield Guineas 2011 the intended grand final, Freedman naming either the $175,000 Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) at Caulfield on September 24 or the $200,000 Group 2 Bill Stutt Stakes over the Moonee Valley mile on Manikato Stakes night, Friday September 30, as their next-up run.

Bought for $80,000 as a yearling by Lee Freedman at the 2010 Australian Easter Sales in Victoria, Specter has now earned back their purchase price plus some with Saturday’s victory pushing their career prize money to $94,425.

Saturday’s gallant runner-up Chase The Rainbow also improved their Caulfield Guineas claims, the Rick Hore-Lacy-trained $90,000 yearling paying $18 for the feature through Luxbet.
