Snowden’s Filly Favourite of the Furious Stakes 2011 Field

Peter Snowden’s up-and-coming filly Anise has opened as the narrow favourite in a wide-open field to take out the $175,000 Group 2 Furious Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm’s Chelmsford Stakes Day meeting this Saturday.

Anise

Anise is the 2011 Furious Stakes favourite

The 2011 Furious Stakes, one of the best early spring races for three-year-old fillies, drew a final field of 10 hopefuls with Anise leading the markets at a quote of $3.20 through Luxbet.

Drawn in gate seven with Joshua Parr engaged for the ride, Anise races second-up for the season after she resumed with a brilliant half-length-away second behind John O’Shea’s top colt Foxwedge in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on August 13.

Anise is already a stakes winner having narrowly defeated Queenian in the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) at Randwick back in April as a juvenile.

Snowden has Anise heading towards the opening elite level of the season, the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill on September 10.

Golden Rose 2011 odds at Luxbet are lead by raging $2.20 favourite Smart Missile, Anise the shortest-priced filly in the markets at quote of $14.

While Anise certainly looks on track for another stakes victory this weekend, the field she faces is full of depth and there are five other Furious Stakes rivals at single-figure odds to upset the favourite including:

  • Pane In The Glass ($4.60 Luxbet) –  John Thompson’s Testa Rossa filly gets the inside running from barrier one on Saturday as she seeks back-to-back victories following her narrow victory in the Group 3 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) first-up on August 20. Her resuming run and win was at Warwick Farm, so benefits from the meeting transfer. Won her opening three as a juvenile before finishing in the top three at her next four Group race starts including her third to Helmet in the Group 1 AJC Sires Produce Stakes and second, again to Helmet, in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes. Will love the 1400 metres on Saturday.
  • Streama ($5.50 Luxbet) – Guy Walter-trained Stratum filly, local to the Warwick Farm track so is well-suited here. Ran an excellent first-up third, beaten less than half a length, to Pane In The Glass in the Silver Shadow Stakes a fortnight ago. She was stride-for-stride with Thompson’s filly before just getting found out, will have improved from the run.
  • Elite Falls ($6.00 Luxbet) – John O’Shea’s well-bred More Than Ready filly was disappointing in the Silver Shadow when resuming, finishing four lengths away fifth after fading over the final 100 metres. She has only raced over 1400 metres once before when seventh in the AJC Sires Produce, but had class when third to Sepoy in the Golden Slipper.

Elite Falls trainer O’Shea knows his filly faces a tough field on Saturday and although he is confident in his ability, he is also well aware of the danger Snowden’s top elect, Anise, presents.

“Anise is probably the horse to beat in the race on Saturday,” O’Shea admitted.

Elite Falls got the better of Anise in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill in March, Anise finishing four and a half lengths away fourth behind the winner, but a lot has changed in both horses since then.

“She (Elite Falls) has done well and will appreciate having had that run and getting a firmer surface on Saturday.”
