Response to Sprinter in 2011 Bobbie Lewis Quality Odds

There have been two major market movers in the odds for Saturday’s $200,000 Group 3 Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) with race favourite Bel Sprinter and Group One winning mare Response both firming in their quote to win the Flemington feature.

Bel Sprinter

Bel Sprinter is the well-backed favourite to win the Bobbie Lewis Quality on Saturday

The 2011 Bobbie Lewis Quality, one of eight top races on the Makybe Diva Stakes Day card, attracted a classy field of 19 gallopers with Jason Warren’s undefeated four-year-old Bel Sprinter the Luxbet favourite.

Opening at a price of $4 to win their fifth race from as many starts on Saturday, the Mornington-based gelding has since shortened into $3.80 with expectations high for Bel Sprinter ahead of their Group debut.

Last start the son of Bel Esprit, sire to fellow unbeaten star Black Caviar, saluted in their first stakes when winning the Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on August 13.

Warren is hoping the purple patch continues, and although aware of the task ahead with the Bobbie Lewis Quality featuring plenty of talent and Bel Sprinter drawn awkwardly in gate 10, remains confident.

“He’s done super since his last run and his work’s been good, he’s holding weight nicely and we’re really happy with him,” Warren said optimistically.

The only other horse in the Bobbie Lewis this year at single-figure odds through Luxbet is Dubleanny, who has the ideal barrier two draw.

Mick Price’s five-year-old mare resumes after a short winter spell, before which she won three straight including back-to-back Listed victories in the Proud Miss Stakes at Morphettville and the Henry Bucks Straight Six at Flemington.

Despite her imposing record down the Flemington straight, six wins from seven attempts, Dubleanny has drifted out from $4.40 to $4.60.

The only horse, aside from the favourite, to firm in their Bobbie Lewis Stakes quote is Response.

In from $13 to $10, the Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra-trained Charge Forward mare resumes racing having run seventh in the Group 1 Goodwood Handicap (1200m) at Morphettville last start on May 8.

Two starts prior to that, she won the Group 1 Sportingbet Classic (1200m), her second elite level success having also saluted in the 2010 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes.

Twelve months ago Response ran a close second in the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) on Makybe Diva Stakes Day, and connections are confident that she has what it takes to be competitive from her favourable barrier four draw on Saturday.

“She is going well,” co-trainer Zahra said.

Other notable Bobbie Lewis Stakes hopefuls on Saturday that represent nice value in the Flemington Race 7 odds include the Gerry Harvey-trained Coolmore Classic winner Aloha ($11), last year’s Golden Rose winner Toorak Toff ($19), dual Group 1 champion Yosei ($26) and former Golden Sipper winner Phelan Ready ($31).
