Melbourne Cup 2011 Nominations Released

The Melbourne Cup 2011 nominations were released by Racing Victoria this afternoon, the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival’s showcase attraction drawing 90 less entries than last year’s iconic 150th edition of the ‘race that stops a nation’.

The 2011 Melbourne Cup has drawn 163 nominations

This year the $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m), set to run as Flemington Race 7 on Tuesday November 1st, attracted a total of 163 nominations including 25 international stayers.

Last year the Melbourne Cup nominations sat at 253 with 45 overseas entries, but with nominations taken a month later this year, numbers were predicted to be lower.

Notable international entries this year include two from powerhouse racing operation Godolphin in Cavalryman and Lost In The Moment; four from the stables of Luca Cumani including former Melbourne Cup runner-up Bauer and the in-form Drunken Sailor; and the Dermot Weld-trained Irish raiders Sense Of Purpose and Galileo’s Choice who will be out to give Weld his third Melbourne Cup victory.

Pre-nomination Melbourne Cup betting markets at Luxbet were lead by $10 co-favourites Lights Of Heaven and Shamrocker, with odds to be updated shortly.

Lights Of Heaven, who races this Saturday in the $300,000 Group 2 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington, is one of six Melbourne Cup nominees for Victoria’s premiership winning trainer Peter Moody.

Moody also has the likes of last year’s Caulfield Cup winner Anacheeva and top Kiwi mare King’s Rose in the list of Melbourne Cup hopefuls, but is yet to confirm whether they will target the famous two-mile showdown or the weight-for-age $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley in October.

Shamrocker, winner of the Australian Guineas – AJC Derby last autumn, is one of three Melbourne Cup contenders for Danny O’Brien.

As always, New Zealand gallopers feature strongly in the Melbourne Cup early entries with notable chances from across the Tasman including Queensland Oaks winner Scarlett Lady and reigning Victoria Derby hero Lion Tamer

Defending Melbourne Cup winner Americain has been nominated to vie for back-to-back editions of the race, as expected, as has last year’s runner-up Maluckyday.
