Leading Sydney trainer Chris Waller has nominated a quartet of his stable stars for this Saturday’s Chelmsford Stakes 2011 including resuming Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner My Kingdom Of Fife.
One of five black-type features set to bring Royal Randwick to life this Saturday, the $175,000 Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) attracted 20 early entries, including a handful of Group One heroes.
The former Queen-owned import My Kingdom Of Fife is sure to attract plenty of love from the Luxbet punters when they race first-up in the Chelmsford this weekend.
The Kingmambo six-year-old returns to the scene following a brief winter break that came on the back of a very successful first ever season in Australia.
After joining Waller’s stables at the start of the year, My Kingdom Of Fife made their debut run down under at Randwick on April 9 winning the Group 3 Doncaster Mile Prelude (1600m) as a $150 roughie.
They went on to win the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) and Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) before their last start second when beaten a nose by Scenic Shot in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2020m) on May 21.
Saturday sees the Melbourne Carnival-bound galloper resume ahead of an ambitious spring campaign.
Waller has My Kingdom Of Fife nominated for all the Melbourne majors including the $2.5 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 15, the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 22 and an entry pending for the 2011 Melbourne Cup.
Following their sensational opening season in Australia, My Kingdom Of Fife is well-liked in the futures markets for the ‘Big Three’ spring showdowns.
Currently Luxbet have them rated a $17 chance in their Caulfield Cup 2011 odds and $21 for both the 2011 Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup.
“I’m still not sure what his grand final is this spring,” Waller admitted.
“The Cox Plate is still a big option.”
They go into Saturday’s race on the back of two promising barrier trials that have Waller optimistic over their first-up chances.
“I’d say he’s at the same level of fitness now as he was going into the Doncaster Prelude,” Waller said.
Top jockey Hugh Bowman is being tipped to take the mount on My Kingdom Of Fife for the first time in the Chelmsford on Saturday, which he hopes will be the start of a successful spring partnership.
“My Kingdom Of Fife is the sort of horse that could step up,” Bowman said.
“There will be a bit of improvement left there because he has bigger fish to fry later on, but the trial (last week at Warwick Farm) was enough to suggest he will run a race.
“I know he won first-up at a mile last start but that was on a wet track, which would have helped him.”
Although Waller nominated My Kingdom Of Fife for the Sydney Spring Carnival’s Epsom Handicap and The Metropolitan last week, the galloper is likely to miss those in favour of heading to Victoria as early as possible.
“I’d like to get him to Melbourne sooner rather than later, but a lot hinges on the weather,” Waller explained.
A hat-trick of My Kingdom Of Fife’s stablemates have also been nominated, and will more than likely be accepted, for the Chelmsford Stakes this year with Waller also entering Group 1 performing gelding Hawk Island, imported Melbourne Cup hopeful Illustrious Blue and Sydney Cup winner Stand To Gain.
Other big-name Chelmsford Stakes nominees include dual Stradbroke Handicap winner Black Piranha, reigning Doncaster Mile champion Sacred Choice looking to bounce back after a first-up seventh in the Warwick Stakes and last year’s Melbourne Cup runner-up Maluckyday whose new season debut has been delayed twice.
