A full field of 14 gallopers, including a number of key Melbourne Cup 2011 hopefuls, will face off at Rosehill this Saturday in the $100,000 Listed Premier’s Cup (1800m).
The 2011 Premier’s Cup is one of two black-type features for Luxbet punters to enjoy a Rosehill bet on this weekend along with the much awaited $125,000 Group 3 Run To The Rose where the likes of Helmet, Smart Missile and Foxwedge will take to the track.
This year’s Premier’s Cup is shaping up as a top showdown between many stayers entertaining hopes of travelling down to Victoria later this spring for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.
Among the horses heading towards the $6 million Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on the first Tuesday of November that are engaged to race in the Premier’s Cup this Saturday are the likes of the Robert Hickmott-trained duo of Mourayan and Alandi, and the Chris Waller-trained The Verminator.
The Lloyd Williams-owned The BMW runner-up Mourayan is the shortest-priced of the Premier’s Cup acceptors in the futures Melbourne Cup odds at Luxbet paying $51.
Another notable galloper that has been accepted for the Premier’s Cup but that is yet to be confirmed as a certain starter is Brian Smith’s Brisbane raider Hume.
The Zabeel eight-year-old, runner-up to Melbourne Cup winner Shocking in the Group 3 The Lexus Stakes (2500m) at Flemington during the 2009 Melbourne Cup Carnival, has been on the comeback trail since returning from a one and a half year break back in June.
Smith, however, is awaiting to see how the track conditions are at Rosehill on Saturday before making a final decision on whether to run Hume in the Listed feature.
“He’s no good in the wet and he won’t run on anything worse than a Slow 6,” Smith said.
Hume is targeting the Group 3 Newcastle Cup (2300m) on September 15, his performance in which may see him continue on to the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick on October 1 during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.
There is also a chance Smith will allocate a Cups campaign for Hume in Melbourne later in the spring.
