Parables Starts Spring Story in Cockram Stakes

Peter Snowden’s well-bred Lonhro mare Parables will shed light on her spring carnival aspirations when she resumes in the $125,000 Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

Parables

Parables may target the 2011 Myer Classic on Victoria Derby Day this spring

Snowden has a number of Darley’s stable frontrunners racing first-up at the PB Lawrence Stakes Day meeting, a known kick-off point for many Melbourne Cup hopefuls over the years, including of course last season’s star juvenile Sepoy.

Another Snowden starter on Saturday with genuine Group 1 claims this spring is four-year-old Parables.

Parables is one of 15 mares engaged in the 2011 Cockram Stakes final field, the multiple Group winner drawn well in barrier five and due to be ridden by Kerrin McEvoy.

“She had a really good spell,” Snowden said of Parables.

“She trialled really sharply last week.

“She’s in great order and she’s quite forward so I expect her to run well.”

To date Parables has scored a hat-trick of turf triumphs and six minor placings, meaning she is yet to finish out of the money in her nine career runs.

Seven of those starts have been at stakes level including her Group 3 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) win in August last year, her third in the Group 1 Coolmore Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick in October and most recently her victory in the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm on March 5.

It is a consistent and impressive record that speaks of a thoroughbred major being within her reach.

Snowden plans to give Parables her chance to salute in an elite level this spring, the prominent trainer naming $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day during the Melbourne Cup Carnival as a possible target.

“Not sure just how far she goes, I thought she struggled at the mile (when third in the 2010 Flight Stakes), but she’s stronger now,” he said.

“There’s a chance she could end up in the Myer Stakes (October 29) but she’s got four runs before that so we’ll know more about whether she’ll get there.

“She’s a very laid back filly….she has a scintillating finish when ridden quietly.”

Saturday’s Cockram Stakes is shaping up as a real highlight on the Caulfield race-card with last year’s Crown Oaks winner Brazilian Pulse also among the contenders.
