Moudre To Miss 2011 Spring Carnival

Trainer Ciaron Maher has confirmed that promising staying type Moudre will miss the entire 2011 Melbourne spring carnival after suffering a tendon injury.

Moudre had been nominated for Saturday’s PB Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield however Maher advised Victorian stewards that his stable star would miss the entire spring.

It is a bitter blow for Maher as Moudre is probably his only horse that could have been ultra-competitive in the spring.

Moudre ran to within a long head of Melbourne Cup winner Americain in last year’s Geelong Cup but then missed a spot in the Cup after running third in the Naturalism, fourth in the Herbert Power, and fourth in the Lexus. A win in any one of those events would have seen him qualify for last year’s Melbourne Cup.

Moudre has won seven of his twenty starts, including the Group Three Queens Cup at Flemington, however it remains unclear whether he will race again.

Meanwhile talented stayer and WA Derby winner Dreamaway has been ruled out of the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups after becoming distressed following a stable change.

The mare was sent to join the Dean Binaisse stable at Mornington, however she failed to come to terms with her new surroundings.

“The filly was stressed when arriving at Dean’s stable. She has settled in now but is more than a month away from trialling,” said owner Bob Peters.

While such a late start to her campaign would mean she would not have the fitness in her legs to tackle a cups campaign, new trainer Dean Binaisse said that he was confident he could have her ready for some of the mares races during the spring.

The Group Two Stock Stakes look like an ideal starting point for the mare who was untouchable earlier in the year in Western Australia.

She managed to put together five wins in succession which included WA Champion Fillies Stakes, the Ascot 1000 Guineas, the McKenna Stakes as well as the WA Oaks/Derby double.

If she can settle at Binaisse’s farm in time she may well be set for the 2011 Myer Classic on Victoria Derby day.
