Cummings Adds to His Caulfield Cup 2011 Contingent

The late inclusion of the Anthony Cummings-trained stablemates Shadows In The Sun and Home On A Wing have boosted the total number of 2011 Caulfield Cup nominations to 238, Racing Victoria taking late entries for the Melbourne Spring Carnival feature today.

Shadows In The Sun

Shadows In The Sun was one of two late 2011 Caulfield Cup entries for Anthony Cummings

Overall there were six late entries for the quartet of showcase events running at Caulfield and Moonee Valley this spring, Cummings boosting his number of $2.5 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) hopefuls to five having paid the $2,750 late fee for both Shadows In The Sun and Home On A Wing.

Of the duo, Dane Shadow four-year-old Shadows In The Sun is the best performer boasting a win the Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) at Morphettville back in May.

They featured in last year’s Melbourne Spring Carnival, Shadows In The Sun given three starts that included a win in a 1600 metre event at Caulfield on Thousand Guineas Day and an unplaced run in the Group 2 AAMI Vase (2040m) at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day.

Cummings will be looking for improvement from Shadows In The Sun after their disappointing Brisbane Winter Carnival assault that saw them finish well back in both the Group 1 Doomben Cup and Group 1 Queensland Derby.

Meanwhile, Hawk Wing five-year-old Home On A Wing earned their chance of making the 2011 Caulfield Cup field after they scored an impressive three and a half length win in a Benchmark 85 Handicap over 2000 metres at Randwick on Saturday.

The victory was just their second from 18 career starts, Home On A Wing tested at stakes level only once to date when they ran sixth to Shoot Out in the 2010 AJC Australian Derby.

Cummings’ other Caulfield Cup-bound gallopers that were among the original nominations taken last week are Zabeel four-year-old Many Stars, former New Zealand runner Red Eye Special and improving son of Encosta De Lago Windsurfer.

In the current Caulfield Cup odds Peter Moody’s undefeated Zabeel mare Lights Of Heaven, who resumes in the PB Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield this Saturday along with Cox Plate co-favourite Whobegotyou, and Queensland Oaks winner Scarlett Lady are the equal $11 top elects.

Cummings’ horses are all rated $301 roughies in Caulfield Cup betting with odds on Shadows In The Sun and Home On A Wing to be released shortly.
