Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The Jim Conlan trained Rekindled Interest will return to the track for the first time since last year’s Victorian Derby when he lines up in the Group Three Aurie Star Handicap at Flemington on Saturday.
After winning the Group Two AAMI Vase at Moonee Valley last year Rekindled Interest was installed as favourite for the Derby, however he was no match for Lion Tamer who blew the field away to win easily.
Following the race Conlan had concerns over the horse’s knees and decided to give him a long spell in the hope the gelding would come back to be a more effective horse this spring.
“After the Derby he had some arthroscopy done on his knee but that wasn’t the issue. It was just one of those days where it poured rain and he just couldn’t get through the conditions,” Conlan said.
“He pulled up okay but we just gave his knees a clean up and a good spell.”
Conlan has entered the son of Redoute’s Choice in the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups as well as the Cox Plate, however he remains uncommitted as to whether he will target the handicaps or the weight for age races this spring.
“I’ve entered him in the Cox Plate and it would be fantastic if he got there but we’ve got to see if that three year old form translates to weight for age,” he said.
“I think he’s a very good horse but he may be better suited in the handicaps where he still gets weight relief. So I’ll just play it by ear and we can take one of two paths after this race.”
While the result is somewhat important to which races Rekindled Interest will target in the spring, Conlan will be more interested in his closing sectionals and how the horse pulls up after the race.
“I tend to think he’ll need this run. He hasn’t raced for ten months and hasn’t had a trial yet,” Conlan said.
“Although he does perform well fresh and I think he’ll improve a great deal from this run.”
Rekindled Interest will be reunited with jockey Dwayne Dunn, who was aboard the horse in his AAMI Vase victory and also his Victorian Derby defeat.
Rekindled Interest is currently being quoted at $11.00 Group Three Aurie Star Handicap, while Perturbo has been declared favourite at $3.00.
