Heathcote May Still Work The Room in Melbourne

After previously declaring that he had ruled out a trip to Melbourne for the spring carnival with Work the Room, Robert Heathcote has had a change of heart and is considering targeting some of the feature events if the six year old can prove himself  in the 2200m Liftronic Handicap at Doomben on Saturday.

Work the Room is yet to win beyond 1700m, but Heathcote is confident the horse can prove himself as a genuine staying type.

“I haven’t ruled out sending him to Melbourne. But to go (sic) he’ll need to win on Saturday and if he does, I’ll freshen him up and send him south with the rest,” Heathcote said.

“I liked the way he won the listed race last start when he ran sub 1.35. Any horse who runs that sought of time is pretty good.”

The gelding has now had five starts for the Heathcote stable since transferring from Colin Little, and Heathcote says that we are now only just seeing the best of him because he has had to overcome complications with his feet.

“He’s got unusual shaped feet and it’s been a battle to get him right,” he said.

“A lot of credit for fixing his feet has to go to my farrier Chris McMullen. Woorim was in the same boat as Work the Room and had a lot of feet problems early on before Chris managed to fix him.”

Heathcote said that he was confident Work the Room could show staying potential as he is a half-brother to Zipping.

Zipping, who was retired earlier this week won three successive Sandown Classics and finished fourth in the Melbourne Cup three times. If Work the Room turns out to be half as strong a stayer as Zipping was there will be a nice race somewhere for him during the 2011 Melbourne spring racing carnival.

Heathcote is preparing an assault on the Melbourne Spring Carnival and would dearly love to win his first Group One race at the showcase carnival and it seems as if Buffering and Woorim are his best chances. He will also take highly rated fillies Funtantes and Fillydelphia as well as Our Lukas.
