Stephen Farley remains confident experienced galloper Gazza Guru can win the Coffs Harbour Cup despite the fact that he has drawn closer to the car park than the running rail.
Gazza Guru will jump from barrier 16 in the $70,000 Coffs Harbour Cup, however Farley does not believe it is a significant disadvantage for the seven year old gelding.
Farley said that the Coffs Harbour racing surface was as fair as he had ever seen it, and he had no doubts that the winner could come from anywhere on the track.
“The barriers obviously not ideal but it’s not the end of the world,” Farley said.
“There’s a 600 metre run to the first turn and if the track races the right way, giving backmarkers an even chance, Gazza Guru has a very good turn of foot.”
Farley also said that he was hoping the track remained in the good range, as that would give his horse the best chance of winning the race.
Gazza Guru has not raced since winning the South Grafton Cup almost a month ago, however Farley said that horse had shown marked improvement since his dominant win at Grafton.
“The horse is very, very good and I couldn’t be happier going into the race. He came home from Grafton, had a bit of a freshen up and I’ve just kept him ticking over,” he said.
“He worked at home on Saturday and his work was as good if not better than before he won the South Grafton Cup.”
Farley also confirmed that jockey Glyn Lynch would more than likely allow the horse to settle towards the tail of the field.
“We’re just going to need some luck at the right time but I’m confident if Gazza gets a crack at them in the straight, he can be right in the finish.”
Farley also confirmed that regardless of the result in the Coffs Harbour Cup he would continue with his plans to enter Gazza Guru in the Taree Cup later this month.
Farley also indicated that Stradbroke Handicap winner Sincero would trial at Randwick on August 19 before heading to the Tramway Stakes at the same venue in early September.
Gazza Guru is currently being quoted as a $6.00 chance in the Coffs Harbour Cup, while the John Thompson trained Southern Shimmer retains favouritism at $3.40.
