Thousand Guineas 2011 Nominations Feature 223 Fillies

There are now officially 223 three-year-old fillies on way to the 2011 Thousand Guineas after nominations for the Melbourne Spring Carnival feature were taken by Racing Victoria today.

One of the richest and most prestigious races of its kind in Australia, the $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas will run over the Caulfield mile (1600 metres) on Wednesday October 12 and provides a nice lead-up to the 2011 Crown Oaks held at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Darley’s head trainer Peter Snowden enjoyed a stranglehold over the two-year-old races last season and will again look to dominate in the feature races for this age group with his crop of new season three-year-olds.

Snowden has 10 fillies entered for the 2011 Thousand Guineas including Exceed And Excel filly Aerobatics, Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes winner Anise, the progressive Disputes and Blue Diamond Prelude runner-up Glissade.

Another ace trainer with a large number of Thousand Guineas hopefuls is local Caulfield-based horseman Peter Moody.

Elite Falls

Golden Slipper Placegetter Elite Falls is one of the top 2011 Thousand Guineas nominees

Moody enjoyed victory in last year’s Caulfield Guineas thanks to Anacheeva, who was one of the 265 2011 Caulfield Cup nominations, and will this year attempt to win the fillies’ equivalent with 10 from his stable in the Thousand Guineas entries including:

  • Metonymy – Fourth to Sepoy in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes, then beaten in the final stride at Flemington last start in the Group 3 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m), advantages from the Caulfield experience
  • Hallowell Belle – Moody’s leading three-year-old filly after being beaten into second only by Sepoy in the Blue Diamond

Other exciting gallopers sure to be installed at the top of the Thousand Guineas betting markets when odds open at Luxbet include those fillies that were competitive in the juvenile Group races last season including:

  • Elite Falls (John O’Shea) – More Than Ready filly won the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) in March before running a game third to Sepoy in the Golden Slipper, also came within two lengths of Helmet in the AJC Sires Produce Stakes at her last run
  • Pane In The Glass (John Thompson) – Daughter of Testa Rossa yet to finish out of the money in her seven career starts that included a Group 1 runner-up double, Pane In The Glass finishing third to Helmet in the AJC Sires Produce Stakes and then second to Helmet again next start in the Champagne Stakes
  • Shared Reflections (Gai Waterhouse) – Promising runner who won the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) at Warwick Farm before finishing sixth in the Golden Slipper and fourth in the AJC Sires Produce Stakes

One filly that was not among the Thousand Guineas nominations was Karuta Queen.

The Neville Layt-trained daughter of Not A Single Doubt enjoyed a string of track triumphs last season including her back-to-back wins in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic in Wyong and $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic on the Gold Coast before she ran a disappointing 10th in the Golden Slipper.

Layt has opted to keep Kauta Queen on a strictly sprint-only spring campaign, which he admits is a bit limiting if he doesn’t travel to Melbourne.

“There is not much about for three-year-old filly sprinters in Sydney, so I might have to look at Melbourne,” he said.

“I rang Racing Victoria….to send me a calendar.”

Thousand Guineas 2011 first declarations will cut the list of contenders down on Tuesday September 6 before second declarations are taken on September 20.

The 2011 Thousand Guineas final field and barrier draw is then released on Monday October 10, the capacity number of runners being 16 starters plus four emergencies.

Other major spring carnival nominations that were released today included those for the 2011 Caulfield Cup where Melbourne Cup winner Americain was an interesting entry and the Cox Plate 2011 nominations being lead by dual defending champion So You Think.
