Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Lionel Cohen may have only recently celebrated his breakthrough city win as a trainer in Australia, but the now Rosehill-based horseman has high hopes for his impressive colt Aeronautical who he believes is worthy of a 2011 Golden Rose campaign.
The opening Group 1 race of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival, the $1 million Golden Rose (1400m) will run at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse on Saturday September 10.
One three-year-old that is vying for a spot in this year’s Golden Rose field is Encosta De Lago colt Aeronautical.
Cohen’s lightly-raced galloper broke their maiden status at their third start as a two-year-old on July 9, beating home a quality field in the Clovelly Handicap (1200m) at Randwick thanks to a scintillating burst of acceleration.
“Not many horses can produce what he did to win,” Cohen said.
“He put them to bed in a matter of 150 metres.”
In that run Cohen, formerly an owner-breeder in South Africa, saw enough to suggest Aeronautical can develop into a Group class horse, even an elite level winner this season with the Golden Rose the main aim.
While enjoying his breakthrough metropolitan, Cohen was focused on building a small but strong stable of horses and hoped another win this weekend would help draw the attention of prospective owners to his budding Rosehill venture.
“There’s one owner who wants to get involved but one Saturday win doesn’t mean it turns everything around,” he said.
“I suppose a more aggressive approach to marketing the stable might help but I’m happy with the way things are going.
“My feeling is I’d rather have a few good horses than a lot of bad ones.
“I don’t want to fill boxes for the sake of it.
“Having said that I’ve got the confidence in myself to back myself and for people to invest in me.”
Aeronautical will begin their grand Golden Rose campaign this Saturday at Rosehill when they race in one of the traditional Rose lead-up races, the $100,000 Listed The Rosebud (1200m).
One of 12 Golden Rose hopefuls originally nominated for the 2011 The Rosebud, entries extended until Wednesday, Aeronautical will a chance to prove their potential and post back-to-back city wins in Sydney.
Young hoop Nathan Berry is likely to retain the ride aboard Aeronautical in The Rosebud having done a remarkable job for the Randwick win last month.
“Nathan didn’t panic on him and he deserves to stay on,” Cohen said.
Three other last-start winners have also been nominated for Saturday’s The Rosebud with the David Payne-trained duo of Al’s Magic Miss who took out the Rosebud Fillies Preview (1100m) at Warwick Farm on July 23 and Queenian, as well as Peter Snowden’s in-form Exceed And Excel gelding Bello coming off back-to-back wins including their two and a half length success in the Rosebud Colts & Geldings Preview (1100m).
Dubelo colt Queenian is the best-tried of the nominees having started nine times to date, but their only win so far was their blistering five and a half length last-start victory over 1400 metres at Rosehill on July 2 which boosted their career winnings to over $102,000 in prize money.
Another notable The Rosebud nominee is high-earner Alcancia from the Port Macquarie stables of Jenny Graham.
The Danbird filly comes off a close second to Al’s Magic Miss in the Rosebud Fillies Preview, and has amassed over $119,000 in prize money to date thanks to their early victory in the $100,000 Scone Inglis Challenge in May.
Australia’s leading online bookmaker Luxbet already has pre-nomination Golden Rose odds and betting markets open now.
