Torvill is tipped as the three-year-old filly to...
Trainer Con Karakatsanis is pinning his hopes on News Alert to win The Galaxy in Race 8 at Randwick today.
News Alert was forced out of racing for more than eight months after contracting a severe stomach virus that almost killed him.
The Danehill Dancer gelding spent three months in the Redlands Veterinary Clinic in Queensland, eventually recovering from the deadly illness.
Con Karakatsanis said that News Alert is a definite fighter.
“I never had a doubt about the horse’s ability but an illness like that can just about ruin a horse,” Karakatsanis said.
“The only thing I had in the back of my mind was that I knew how tough this horse was, I think that’s the thing that pulled him through.”
News Alert put in a gallant run to finish second last start in the Group 3 Sebring Stakes and Karakatsanis says it would means a lot to him if the six-year-old could come up with his first group 1 victory today.
“It would be something special if he could win,” Karakatsanis said.
“We’ve put in so much work to get him back where he was, he’s been a great horse for the stable and to have him back even racing in a race like this is awesome.
“A win would just be a bonus.”
