Smart Missile Cleared for 2011 AJC Sires Produce Stakes – Derby Day Nominations
The Anthony Cummings-trained Smart Missile has been cleared to race in this Saturday’s $500,000 Group 1 AJC Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) on Derby Day 2011 in a small consolation after the sensational scratching of the promising colt from last weekend’s Golden Slipper.

A son of Fatnet Rock, Smart Missile was second-favourite to eventual winner Sepoy in the Golden Slipper betting before getting his leg caught in the starting gates forcing his late withdrawal.
After the controversial scratching from the $3.5 million AAMI Golden Slipper on April 2, Smart Missile was required to perform at a jump out in front of Racing NSW Stewards before being allowed to race again.
The obligatory jump out was arranged in haste and took place on Monday morning.
Smart Missile performed well in the hit-out and chief steward Ray Murrihy lifted the racing embargo on the unbeaten two-year-old without delay.
The 2011 AJC Sires Produce Stakes, one of three elite level showdowns in the AJC Australian Derby Day programme at Randwick this Saturday, has drawn a large number of two-year-olds at nomination stage with 112 early entries.
Darley’s glamour colt and Golden Slipper winner Sepoy will not take part in the race however, the $2.9 million earner sent for a spell after his sensational victory in the Slipper meaning Smart Missile will miss out on a rematch.
The duo met in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on March 19 where Smart Missile was able to get the better of Sepoy on the rain affected track.
Whether he could have done so again in the world’s richest two-year-olds race will now never be known.
The other top nominee for this year’s AJC Sires Produce Stakes is another juvenile that narrowly missed out on a Slipper run, the Bart Cummings-trained Do You Think.
Do You Think was the first and only emergency for the Golden Slipper but did not gain a start in the race.
Instead the Starcraft colt ran in the $125,000 Group 3 The Schweppervescence (1400m) on Slipper Day where he claimed an easy victory, his second from as many career starts.
The other most notable nominee for Bart in the AJC Sires Produce is Salade.
A lightly-races Snitzel colt, Salade earned a start in the Golden Slipper after winning the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) on debut at Rosehill on March 26.
Backing up just seven days later, Salade ran eighth beaten 5 ½ lengths by Sepoy in the Slipper.
The other best performing Golden Slipper runners nominated for the AJC Sires Produce are third-placegetter Elite Falls, the Lee Freedman-trained Masthead (4th), Peter Snowden’s filly Altar (5th), Gai Waterhouse’s Sweet Embrace Stakes winner Shared Reflections (6th) and Foxwedge (7th).
While the 2011 AJC Derby field was released this morning, the final line-ups for the remainder of the Randwick races on the programme including the AJC Sires Produce Stakes will be out tomorrow and published right here at Races.com.au.
