The David Payne-trained Street Cry colt Sea Lord was coming a fourth place finish in the Listed Canberra Guineas (1400m) and went out in the Darby Munro Stakes today as a $26 outsider.
After jumping, four of the field moved up quickly to sit across early including the Gillian Heinrich-trained Military Rose from barrier one who would eventually drop right out in a disappointing finish from last year’s Magic Millions winning filly.
Soon after jockey Kerrin McEvoy took the Peter Snowden-trained favourite Palomares ahead to lead clearly from Military Rose.
With 300m to go Palomares was still in front from Mark Kavanagh’s Too Deadly who had moved up into second.
Then over the final 100m, hoop Glyn Schofield bought Sea Lord up quickly on the inside, the eventual winner going on the back of Palomares.
The favourite looked to be travelling well but was just unable to get there in the end, Sea Lord coming home nicely to win a half length over Palomares ($4) with the triple-figure roughie of the field My Destiny just a long head away third in an eye-catching run.
Having proved to be a genuine sprinter today winning in a fine time of 1:10.87, Sea Lord has now own three of their nine career starts for over $145,000 in prize money.
Next the race towards the 2011 Golden Slipper continues with Rosehill Race 2 – the $175,000 Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) set to jump at 12:50pm (AEDST).
Golden Archer is the favourite to win at a firming quote through Luxbet, but with plenty of Golden Slipper hopefully vying for a spot in the $3.5 million field next Saturday punters can expect a cracker showdown so bet now at Luxbet!
