Guy Walter Bids For Elusive Golden Slipper Start

There isn’t much Guy Walter hasn’t seen in his 20 years as a top level trainer but a Golden Slipper runner from his stable is one thing that has thus far eluded him.

While he’s done some amazing things, including a certain highlight when he trained the trifecta in the Doncaster Mile, if he could get a start in the 2011 Golden Slipper it would add a big tick to his resume.

Exceed And Exalt and Streama are still well and truly in contention for this year’s race but will need to find a big run in their qualifying races today.

The equation is simply, win and you’re in with Exceed And Exalt to contest the Pago Pago Stakes and Streama to line up in the Magic Night Stakes.

“I’ve had the odd top two-year-old like Excites (2006 AJC Sires Produce Stakes) and Katima (1998 Gimcrack Stakes) but I’ve never had a Golden Slipper runner,” Walter said.

Exceed And Exalt and Streama are both in the Slipper at this stage but obviously they will have to race well (today).”

He was clearly targeting the $3.5 million race when he went o the Inglis Easter Sales and paid $250,000 for the colt last year.

“I trained the colt’s mother, Laetitia and she has since been a very good producer at stud – she’s the dam of Seeking Attention and Stryker,” Walter said.

“He is bred to be a two-year-old.”

He won impressively in Canterbury on debut but it’s tough to tell how that form will transfer across to the Pago Pago field.

“It is very hard to be confident when he has to make such a quantum leap in class but I did think his effort at Canterbury was outstanding,” Walter said.

Streama is yet to win a race from her two starts but she has finished second on both occasions including when stepping up in class last start in the Sweet Embrace Stakes beating plenty of higher rated horses

“The form around her is very good,” Walter said.

“I think she is a very promising filly with a big future.”

At Luxbet right now Streama is third favourite for the Magic Night Stakes at a $5.00 fixed price.

In the Pago Pago Stakes Exceed And Exalt is more of a roughie but has moved in from $16 to a $13 fixed price.

If you fancy either of them for a long range Golden Slipper punt you can get heaps more on the early bird fixed markets with $51 about Stream and a massive $151 for Exceed And Exalt.
