Lee Freedman is an obvious omission from the list of trainers with runners in the 2011 Golden Slipper but he walks into Rosehill today hoping to walk out with a newly discovered chance.
He’s not overly confident though talking down the prospects of his only remaining qualifying hope Retsina, which has to win the Magic Night Stakes at Rosehill Gardens today.
She’s only had a single run where she finished fourth over 1000m at Flemington but she was only a neck away from the winner Golden Archer, one of the best two-year-olds in the country.
“I haven’t had the conversation (Golden Slipper) with connections yet but hopefully it will become a must-do after tomorrow,” Freedman said.
“I wouldn’t say I am super confident she will win but I am certain she can run very well in the Magic Night.
“I think with the race experience and a good draw she should settle fourth or fifth and give herself every chance.”
Her 600m time was a clear cut fastest at the Flemington race meet which has sent her price plummeting for the Magic Night Stakes, now at around $3.30 with online bookmaker Luxbet.
There’s also plenty of support for her in the Golden Slipper where she remains a $34 chance despite not even being in the field at present.
Punters could be buoyed by the fact Freedman has walked this path before, albeit all the way back in 1983.
In that year he trained Blint Marscay which won the Magic Night Stakes after two previous runs and then backed up in the Golden Slipper where she claimed the race with ease.
