Favourite in the 2011 Rosehill Guineas odds since markets opened, last start New Zealand Derby champion Jimmy Choux was well backed by the Aussie punters today staring at $4.50 in the market.
Adding a fifth consecutive Group victory to his record, Thorn Park three-year-old Jimmy Choux was ultra impressive today running the ideal preparatory run for the $1.5 million Group 1 AJC Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick on April 9.
Jumping away well from barrier six, Jimmy Choux displayed early speed and found the ideal position fifth on the rail after settling.
Setting the pace, the Peter Snowden-trained Retrieve rolled up to hit the lead from Gai Waterhouse’s Light Brigade with last-start Australian Guineas winner Shamrocker settling into third just ahead of Peter Moody’s Anacheeva.
After the turn, Retrieve maintained the lead controlling the race and sprinting away on the straight.
Retrieve gave them something to chase but in the final few hundred meters Jimmy Choux displayed a brilliant turn of foot, rounding up Retrieve and running to the lead.
On the line it was Jimmy Choux a length clear of Retrieve, while the sole filly in this year’s Rosehill Guineas, Shamrocker lost few admirers finishing a close third.
It was a remarkable achievement for Jimmy Choux today as the star colt became the first New Zealand Derby winner to take at the Rosehill Guineas since Surfers Paradise back in 1991.
