Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra will once again tackle the undefeated Black Caviar with an aggressive race plan optimistically trying to throw her off her game in the William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley Racecourse tonight.
A similar race tactic was applied last time their Golden Slipper winner, Crystal Lily, faced the Black Flash and it worked well enough to give them second spot ahead of a few more fancied place bets.
Connections are still not without hope that her improved fitness after the run will mean she can take the race to Black Caviar even more tonight.
“Last start everything went to plan and the last 100 metres was probably the best part of her race,” Zahra said.
“She really hit the line strongly and had a good blow afterwards.
“She has come through the race really well and improved a bit.”
In her first meeting with Black Caviar the stable tried to shadow their rival but now believes the fifth placed finish proved the plan was too cautious.
The ride from Stephen Baster in the Newmarket did enough to secure him another ride tonight .
They had an option to take Crystal Lily to the Sportingbet Classic for fillies and amres in Adelaide but staying home was as much about her future preperations as it was about facing Black Caviar for a third time.
“We don’t want to be travelling over there (Adelaide) and back, and then up to Sydney,” Zahra said.
“We are not running scared of her (Black Caviar).
“We are all probably running for second again but you never know, she (Black Caviar) might find trouble around the Valley.”
Her trainer Peter Moody has little doubt Black Caviar will avoid any such trouble and cruise to her 11th straight victory.
From Moonee Valley she will travel to Sydney for the $1 million TJ Smith Stakes on April 9th.
After that she’ll come back to Melbourne for a short break before flying north to Brisbane for the BTC Cup on May 14th and the Doomben 10,000 on May 28th.
Moody also seemingly ruled out the idea of a More Joyous showdown in the All-Aged-Stakes at Randwick on April 23rd saying it had never been on his race program.
Flying to Brisbane was also going to be used as a test before potentially taking the mare overseas to race next season, potentially as early as December in Hong Kong.
Before then though it’s all about Moonee Valley tonight and the William Reid Stakes.
Joining Crystal Lily in challenging the queen will be also be the other Moody runners Hinchinbrook, Master Harry, Panipique.
