Once Were Wild Leads 2011 N E Manion Cup Final Field

One of the early favourites for the 2011 Sydney Cup, Gai Waterhouse’s Once Were Wild leads a quality field of stayers in this Saturday’s $100,000 Listed N E Manion Cup (2400m) at Rosehill Gardens.

The 2011 Exponet N E Manion Cup is one of nine black-type features set to run for Rosehill Guineas Day this year and features a capacity field of 14 runners plus one emergency.

Leading the list of acceptors for Rosehill Race 8 on Saturday is Johannesburg mare Once Were Wild.

Waterhouse’s classy four-year-old, a Group 1 winner during the autumn last year in the AJC Oaks, sits as the $9 third favourite behind stablemate Descarado ($4.60F) and the Lloyd Williams-owned Linton ($7.50) in the Luxbet odds for the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) set to run at Randwick on Saturday April 23.

Once Were Wild has had two starts this season most recently finishing a well-beaten 11th in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) at Warwick Farm on March 5.

Stepping up to 2400m on Saturday, however, will suite but she must contend from a wide barrier 15 draw and carry a heft 58.5kg with Nash Rawiller in the mount.

Lorne Dancer

Lorne Dancer is one of two runners in the NE Manion Cup for Gai Waterhouse along with Once Were Wild

Waterhouse will also be represented in the N E Manion Cup by Lorne Dancer, the six-year-old drawn in gate nine and coming off a gallant fourth to Saint Encosta in the Group 3 Randwick City Stakes (2120m).

John Thompson’s Saint Encosta is also backing up in the N E Manion Cup on Saturday, the Encosta De Lago four-year-old drawn ideally in barrier four which is the gate they won the Randwick City Stakes from last start.

Other top horses in the 2011 N E Manion Cup field include:

  • Above Average (Lee Freedman) – High Chaparral five-year-old was second in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m) and Sandown Cup (3200m) during the spring, drawn well in barrier five with Corey Brown booked for the ride
  • Bid Spotter (Graeme Rogerson) – Redoute’s Choice five-year-old won the Group 3 Hobart Cup (2200m) two starts back before fading to finish 14th in the Launceston Cup last start, has a wide barrier 14 draw to overcome
  • Sandberg (Guy Walter) – Only other last-start winner in the field along with Saint Encosta, has come up trumps with barrier one for Saturday after a smart win over 2000m at Canberra on March 13 where they carried a huge 60.5kg to victory, drops down to 53kg this start
