$101 outsider Zavite causes major upset to win the 2011 Ranvet Stakes from Descarado
The 2011 Ranvet Stakes has been won by Zavite in race 5 on Rosehill Garden’s Coolmore Stakes Day.
Zavite won the $400,000 race by a short half head ahead of second favourite Descarado.
The Zabeel gelding began as the longest priced runner in the field, paying odds of $101 at Luxbet.
The race began when Zavite burst out of the stalls to led the field from the beginning.
Illustrious Blue pressed to settle in second after making his way from the rear of the field three wide.
At the home turn Descarado pulled to the lead, but Zavite wouldn’t give up on his run, and claimed victory in what was a striking display of stayer’s ability.
Hawk Island put in a gallant run to finish third ahead of the favourite, and last year’s Melbourne Cup runner-up, Maluckyday, who was unable to keep up with the top three and finished in fourth.
Maluckyday was paying odds of $2.60 at Luxbet to win the 2011 Ranvet Stakes.
The four-year-old gelding was playing up in the barrier stalls, attempting to rear up multiple times.
The veteran winner of the 2,000 metre Ranvet Stakes, Zavite, is now sure to be one of the early favourites for the 2011 BMW on Golden Slipper Day on April 2, 2011.
