Straight Gold No Longer A Fit for The Golden Slipper

Straight Gold may have run himself right out of contention for the 2011 Golden Slipper with a disappointing fourth in the Todman Stakes again showing his lack of temperament.

After bursting onto the scene with a massive win first up this year many people held high hopes for the two year old colt with no shortage of early Golden Slipper bets fielded.

Concerns were surely raised though after his run in the Silver Slipper where he proved a massive handful for his jockey and really showed himself as a novice, despite still finishing in third.

It was this placing despite a poor run which retained some support for an improved run in the Todman but he didn’t find it, again beating himself after never looking a threat in the race.

He can’t blame a freakish Sepoy effort either, with the odds-on favourite being brought back to earth through a marvellous run by Smart Missile, proving he is certainly very beatable.

Straight Gold is now as deep as 11th in the line of betting for the 2011 Golden Slipper paying around $34 for the win.

The most loyal of punters may again blame lack of race experience but given this was his last chance before the main event it’s hard to see him turning it around.

Some could also argue it was the wet track but either way this horse needs to somehow find a mountain of improvement in just two weeks to be a genuine threat.

One positive to take is that the results of the two Slipper Trials have proved that the Golden Slipper is now far from a done deal and the field i genuinely open.

Still, his last two runs have been a big letdown given what we saw in the first race of his career.
