Smart Missile defeats Sepoy in the 2011 Todman Stakes at Rosehill
Smart Missile has won the Group 2 Todman Stakes ahead of the overwhelming favourite for the race Sepoy.
The Fastnet Rock two-year-old missed the start out of the gates but came back with sheer determination to snatch the $300,000 race away from the odds-on favourite Sepoy, who was paying just $1.20 for the win at Luxbet.
Smart Missile, who paid $22.10 for his classy win at Luxbet, has now won two from two race starts.
The Anthony Cumming-trained two-year-old also won the Listed NSW Breeders Plate, which he won by an overwhelming 1.5 lengths in October last year.
The win came as a dramatic shock, with all expectations lying with the Blue Diamond Stakes winner Sepoy.
We must now wonder if Sepoy is able to handle the Sydney way of running, after running and winning his first five races on Melbourne tracks.
The question now is whether Sepoy, who is currently $1.90 favourite for the 2011 Golden Slipper on April, 2, will drop dramatically in odds for the $3.5 million race.
This was Sepoy’s first loss in six races and Peter Snowden appeared to have no inkling that his superstar juvenile would perform any differently in today’s race.
“He’s settling in really well, he’s doing a great job and that makes our job a lot easier,” Snowden said prior to the race.
There is still time to bet on the remaining seven races on Coolmore Classic Day at Luxbet.
