Kid Kobe A Potential Giant Killer On-Route To Golden Slipper

Golden Archer & Kid Kobe

Golden Archer & Kid Kobe going to the line in the Listed Streets Stakes.

He may be a long shot but trainer John Mcardle isn’t afraid of the monumental task at hand when his runner Kid Kobe lines up against Sepoy today in the 2011 Todman Slipper Trial today.

He’s hoping he can at the very least sneak a place and force his way up the order of entry for the 2011 Golden Slipper in two weeks time.

It would be a fantastic effort as the gelding was worth just $26,000 when bought at the Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling sales.

He was beaten a nose on debut in the Listed Streets Ice Cream Stakes by Golden Archer at Flemington last Saturday week.

“He’s settled in really well at Warwick Farm and Brad Rawiller went up and rode him on Wednesday morning and he was more than happy with the horse,” McArdle said.

“He seems to be working on his right leg so all’s well so far.

“Sepoy’s obviously going to be very, very hard to beat. He’s the best two-year-old in the country.

“But my horse did a few things wrong at his first start and he got very warm in the mounting yard which is unlike him as he’s usually a very calm horse.”

The original target for Kid Kobe was the Blue Diamond but McArdle felt there wasn’t enough time to get him up to 100 percent so switched course towards the Golden Slipper.

“He’s won every trial he’s had and was just beaten at his only start and the form seems to be standing up,” he said.

“We’ve said all along it was worth the punt, but he has to run in the first two, maybe first three, on Saturday to get enough prize money to make the Slipper field.

“He showed good barrier speed in his only start, that’s why he sat outside the leader.

“In his trials he’s led but in his last trial we sat him back behind some horses to give him the experience of doing that.

“I think tempo will decide where he settles in the small field (of five) on Saturday but hopefully he’ll be somewhere thereabouts.

Sepoy will be very hard to beat and Foxwedge is going very well but if he handles everything okay he’ll be competitive.”

Sepoy is a monster favourite with online bookmaker Luxbet for the Todman Slipper Trial at a $1.24 fixed price.

Kid Kobe is at $34 and a huge $50 on the current fluctuations.

In Golden Slipper futures betting Sepoy is just about in odds on territory while Kid Kobe is at monster $71 odds.

If you listen to McArdle that’s a lot more than fair for this horse and he could upset a few punters very soon.
