Melbourne Cup Winner Shocking out of Sydney Autumn Carnival 2011

Shocking has been ruled out of the Sydney Autumn Carnival

Last Saturday’s Australian Cup winner Shocking is the most notable defector from the $400,000 Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill this weekend after the champion stayer has been ruled out of the remainder of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

Mark Kavanagh’s Street Cry five-year-old Shocking added his name to a select list of turf greats to win both the Melbourne Cup and Australian Cup when the 2009 Melbourne Cup winner claimed a decisive two length victory over Linton in the $1 million Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington on March 12.

Connections considered backing him up in the Ranvet Stakes to seek back-to-back Group 1 wins at Rosehill’s Coolmore Classic Day this Saturday March 19, however after pulling up a little scratchy after the Australian Cup Shocking will now be sent for a spell to freshen up.

Shocking was also a major nominee and early favourite in the Luxbet odds for the $2.25 million Group 1 The BMW (2400m) at Rosehill on Saturday April 2, Golden Slipper Day.

Last year’s Melbourne Cup runner-up, Zabeel four-year-old Maluckyday is now the clear $2.80 favourite in the futures The BMW betting at Luxbet.

Maluckyday resumed with a good first-up fourth to Danleigh in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) at Warwick Farm on March 5.

The Hawkes-trained gelding is now also the favourite to win the 2011 Ranvet Stakes this Saturday after drawing ideally with barrier three in the small seven-horse final field.

The withdrawal of Shocking, a winner of close to $5 million in prize money from his 27 career starts to date, is a real loss to the Sydney Racing Festival for the season.

However, racing fans and punters can now look forward to a reinvigorated Shocking vying for a second Melbourne Cup victory during the spring.

The 2011 Melbourne Cup is the premier Australian showdown worth over $6 million in prize money and will take place at Flemington on Tuesday November 1.
