Golden Slipper 2011 Odds Update – Karuta Queen Drifts after Canberra Loss

Karuta Queen

Karuta Queen has drifted in the 2011 Golden Slipper betting markets after running second in Canberra

Magic Millions Classic winner Karuta Queen has blown right out in the betting markets for the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on April 2 after the previously unbeaten filly suffered her first defeat at Canberra on Sunday.

Dominant favourite to win the $250,000 Listed Black Opal Stakes (1200m) having won all four of her previous career starts, the Neville Layt-trained daughter of Not A Single Doubt failed to maintain her flawless record on Sunday.

In an upset Black Opal result, Karuta Queen ($1.20F) could only manage to finish one and a half lengths away second to consistent local two-year-old You’re Canny ($11) with the Clarry Conners-trained Bright Heart ($21) finishing off the Trifecta in third.

You’re Canny is not Golden Slipper bound, but Bright Heart is a rough chance of making it into the field and is paying $151 in the Golden Slipper odds at Luxbet.

Sunday was a far cry from the 13 ½ length barrier trial win at the Canberra track Karuta Queen enjoyed in late February.

Prior to Sunday’s loss, Karuta Queen enjoyed four successive wins including her smart three length victory over Combat Kitty in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast on January 15.

Karuta Queen was, before her Black Opal defeat, the $7.50 second favourite in the Golden Slipper odds at Luxbet behind the Darley-owned superstar Sepoy.

Luxbet now have Karuta Queen as the $12 fourth favourite in their Golden Slipper betting markets.

Sepoy remains all the rage among the punters, Peter Snowden’s Elusive Quality colt now at $2 to maintain his impeccable record and become the 2011 Golden Slipper winner.

Emphatic winner of the $1 million Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) last start at Caulfield on February 26, Sepoy is set to make his Sydney debut at Rosehill this Saturday in the $300,000 Group 2 Todman Slipper Trial (1200m).

The benefit of a Sydney start before his assault on the Golden Slipper Stakes is sure to see odds on the top two-year-old shorten at Luxbet so now is the time to back Sepoy before he runs and wins again this weekend.

Sepoy will take on two other unbeaten colts in the Todman on Saturday with Foxwedge and Smart Missile also confirmed starters in the Rosehill race offering a Golden Slipper ballot exemption to the winner.

The John O’Shea-trained son of Fastnet Rock, Foxwedge is the $9.50 third favourite in the Luxbet Golden Slipper odds after he won The Clarry Conners Plate (1100m) at Warwick Farm on March 5.

Fellow Fastnet Rock colt, the Anthony Cummings-trained Smart Missile is a $21 chance at Luxbet to win the Golden Slipper Stakes having won their sole career start to date with a victory in the Listed NSW Breeders Plate (1000m) at Randwick on debut back in October.

Last start winner of the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) on February 26, Clarry Conners’ unbeaten Flying Spur filly Satin Shoes looks primed to extend her record to four from four when she also runs at Rosehill this Saturday in the $300,000 Group 2 Reisling Slipper Trial (1200m).

The other major mover in the Golden Slipper betting markets over the past week is the Gai Waterhouse-trained Shared Reflections.

Firming into a $26 chance for the Golden Slipper at Luxbet, Umatilla filly Shared Reflections was the eye-catching winner of the Group 3 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) at Warwick Farm last Saturday.

Another weekend winner that has earned a shot at Sepoy in the Golden Slipper field is Running Tall.

The Danny O’Brien-trained Stratum colt ran seventh beaten sixth lengths by Sepoy in the Blue Diamond Stakes but was back in the winners’ circle at Flemington on Saturday after claiming a tidy two length victory in the Group 2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m).

Despite the win, Running Tall remains a $51 roughie in the Golden Slipper odds at Luxbet and at a generous price of $13.50 to Place represents great value to add into your Golden Slipper exotics.
