Saint Encosta Wins Randwick City Stakes – Warwick Farm Results Race 5

Saint Encosta

Saint Encosta is the 2011 Randwick City Stakes winner

The 2011 Randwick City Stakes has been won in stellar style by John Thompson’s Saint Encosta.

The Group 3 Randwick City Stakes was run over 2,120 metres and was worth $125,000.

Saint Encosta put in a thrilling run to smash the course record that was set a decade ago by an unbelievable one and a half seconds.

Lorne Dancer began the race as favourite, paying odds of $3 to win at Luxbet, while saint Encosta was backed into $8 after opening at $13.

The 2011 Randwick City Stakes started with Lorne Dancer and Alexander Of Hales beginning well, with both surging to the front of the field in the early stages of the race.

Scouting Wide was caught in an unfavourably wide position facing the breeze.

The horses came around the home turn bunched together until Saint Encosta took the inside run down the rail to win ahead of Alexander of Hales who finished second and Scottish Border who ran on for third.

Before today, Saint Encosta had been unlucky in racing, winning only one of his 17 race starts to date.

This Group 3 Randwick City Stakes victory was the four-year-old Encosta De Lago gelding’s first win since his maiden victory in a $14,000 Newcastle maiden plate.

There is still time to have a punt on the 2011 Turnpoint Randwick Guineas that will feature as Race 6 next at Warwick Farm.
