Kavanagh’s Diamond for 2011 Adelaide Cup Breakthrough

King Diamond

Mark Kavanagh is hoping to win the 2011 Adelaide Cup with King Diamond

The Adelaide Cup hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for home trainer Mark Kavanagh but in 2011 he could change all that with the favourite King Diamond.

Currently the four-year-old is sitting below $5 with some bookmakers but, before we have a look at the horses form, it’s worth following the heartache of his champion trainer.

In 2000 he saddled up the raging hot favourite ‘Mr Nelson’ but only managed to get as far as the mounting yard.

Unfortunately just minutes before the race, the weather became so bad the entire event program was postponed.

“The next week he (Mr Nelson) came out and won the St Leger by a space,” Kavanagh said.

Since then he’s had ‘Odysseus’ finish third and just last year ‘Itstheone’ proved to be incorrectly named by delivering another third spot.

It could all be set to change though as King Diamond enters the 2011 Adelaide Cup in blistering form.

In his past five starts he’s won four and ran second giving his connections plenty of hope.

“He’s done everything right this preparation,” Kavanagh said.

“We’ll head to Adelaide and see what happens.”

His last start win at Flemington was by more than a length and accounted for a few of the same horses lining up this Monday.

Even more impressive is the fact he did it carrying 59kgs, in the Adelaide Cup he’ll only be slugged with a modest 55kgs.

While Kavanagh acknowledges the Adelaide Cup would be a special one to win, he’s certainly not getting carried away after suffering plenty of disappointment at Morphettville in the past.

“Each week he goes one better. We keep raising the bar for him and he keeps going one better,” Kavanagh said.
